This study investigates the microstructural evolution of high-strength magnesium alloys under elevated temperatures, with a focus on the effects of different heat treatment methods. The alloys used in this work were extruded Mg–xY–1Cu–1Ni (x=1, 2, 3), which are known for their superior strength. The addition of rare-earth (RE) elements such as Y, along with transition metals (TM) such as Cu and Ni, promotes the formation of Long-Period Stacking Ordered (LPSO) phases, which significantly enhance the mechanical strength of magnesium alloys. To explain the microstructural behavior of these high-strength alloys in high temperature environments, the morphological changes of the α-Mg matrix and LPSO phases were examined under different heat treatment routes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was conducted to identify the endothermic reactions responsible for these microstructural transformations. Prior to heat treatment, the LPSO phases exhibited Block-shaped morphologies. However, furnace heat treatment (FHT) induced a transformation into Rod-shaped structures. When sufficient endothermic absorption occurred, the LPSO phases further evolved into net-shaped morphologies. DSC results revealed that the temperature range of endothermic reactions varied depending on the Y content, and that the extent of LPSO morphological transformation was strongly correlated with the magnitude of the absorbed enthalpy. Electropulsing treatment (EPT), conducted under the same temperature conditions as FHT, promoted grain refinement, which consequently contributed to hardness improvement. Additionally, microstructures of specimens fractured after EPT and those subjected to FHT at 703 K were compared, enabling a systematic investigation of the LPSO phase evolution under each thermal condition.
