Modern society, under the influence of postmodernism, critiques fixed value systems and binary ways of thinking about gender, and seeks new aesthetic sensibilities that emphasize diversity and individuality.

Within this cultural context, drag artists have drawn attention as figures who dismantle social norms and hierarchies and reframe the concept of beauty in playful yet artistic ways. The overall image of drag artists, including makeup, goes beyond a simple outward transformation and functions as a form of visual language, acting as an important visual signifier that expands the boundaries between popular culture and artistic discourse.

This study expands upon existing art-theoretical discussions that have focused on the formative characteristics or modes of expression of drag artists, by adopting the aesthetic characteristics of “camp,” which emerged in cultural discourse from the mid to late twentieth century, as its theoretical foundation. Based on this framework, the study analyzes the formative characteristics and aesthetic intentions embedded in drag artists’ makeup imagery, and realizes these findings through a total of eight works.

The results of the study are as follows. First, the aesthetic characteristics of camp that appear in drag makeup imagery were derived into four categories: Aestheticism, Playfulness, Subversion, and Theatricality.

Second, Aestheticism aims to maximize visual beauty through artificially constructed femininity, and the commonly identified key terms include “feminine,” “artificial,” “ornate,” “sensual,” and “intense.” Playfulness focuses on constructing humorous and enjoyable moods by combining childlike and kitsch imagery with heterogeneous elements, and the key terms most frequently identified include “childlike,” “heterogeneous,” “popular,” “kitsch,” and “cartoonish.” Subversion appears as a visual expression whose core intention is to distort and dismantle norms and standards of normality established by society, and its key terms were derived as “political,” “satirical,” “grotesque,” “aggressive,” and “queer.” Theatricality is characterized by unreal staging that dismantles gender binaries and blurs the boundary between reality and fiction, and the related key terms were identified as “androgynous,” “extraordinary,” “imbalanced,” “unreal,” and “avant-garde.”

This study demonstrates, through creative production, the core values pursued by the camp aesthetic and how these values are visually realized when applied to drag artists’ makeup. Furthermore, by analyzing the formative differences that emerge among each aesthetic characteristic, the study confirms that drag makeup transcends mere decorative expression operates as a visual practice accompanied by aesthetic thinking and critical meaning.

This suggests that the artistic practices of drag artists expand beyond simple gender transformation or flamboyant performance, constituting a critical practice that disrupts social norms and prompts a rethinking of aesthetic standards. Beyond this, it is hoped that this study will serve as reference material for expanding the expressive scope and artistic potential of not only drag artists but also various makeup artists, and that subsequent studies will continue to illuminate drag culture from more diverse and multidimensional perspectives.
