아이롱 퍼머넌트 웨이브와 콜드 퍼머넌트 웨이브를 이용한 남성 헤어스타일 제작

In modern society, appearance plays a key role in expressing an individual's social image and identity, and among these factors, hairstyle serves as an important element that directly influences visual image and personal expression. As men’s perception of beauty has significantly changed in recent years, various styles using permanent waves and coloring have emerged beyond the previously dominant cut-centered styles. Within this trend, hairstyles have become a crucial medium for self-expression as well as a means of defining outward appearance.
This study aims to examine how permanent wave techniques affect men's hairstyle designs based on identical men's haircuts. In particular,
the study compares iron permanent waves and cold permanent waves—both permanent wave methods—to analyze differences in styling processes, texture expression, and design outcomes. The aim is to understand how technical differences affect the completeness and texture of hair design and provide basic data that can be applied to academic research and practice related to beauty
For the methodology, four representative men’s haircut styles—Leaf, Dandy, Regent, and Sports—were selected, and a total of 12 works were produced by applying both iron permanent waves and cold permanent waves to each style. The final works were analyzed based on texture, curl shape, volume, and shape retention, and visual comparisons were used to identify expressive differences.
The analysis for each style is as follows:
The Leaf style requires light layers and natural flow. The iron permanent wave emphasized flow through elastic curls and glossy texture, while the cold permanent wave produced soft, natural curls but tended to loosen when dried.
The Dandy style emphasizes a neat silhouette and soft movement. Iron permanent waves created structured waves and strong volume with high shape retention, whereas cold permanent waves provided natural texture but lower curl durability after drying.
The Regent style requires strong root volume and defined direction. Iron permanent waves successfully delivered volume, elasticity, and stability, while cold permanent waves produced soft curls but lacked sufficient volume and directional control.
The Sports style involves short hair that easily lifts or spreads. Iron permanent waves established firm volume and curl direction, maintaining
stability, while cold permanent waves generated natural waves but exhibited low retention and weak directional control on short hair.
Overall, the findings show that iron permanent waves are advantageous for forming elastic waves and directional control even on short hair, making them effective for styles such as Regent and Sports that require strong root correction and shape retention. Cold permanent waves, determined by rod size and placement, are suitable for expressing natural textures and soft waves.
These characteristics suggest the need for technical selection based on design direction, hair length, hair condition, and desired texture, providing practical grounds for client-centered design decisions in beauty practice.
This study visually demonstrates that differences in permanent wave techniques can lead to notable changes in texture, form, and image even when the haircut style is identical. It also confirms that permanent wave techniques function as significant variables in design expression and contributes academic value by addressing the relatively limited research on permanent wave designs according to men's haircut styles. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on hairstyle transitions, image analyses, or style preferences, this study presents concrete design differences through comparative works and offers foundational data and practical insights for beauty professionals in selecting techniques suited to clients’ styles, goals, and hair conditions.
However, this study is limited in that the works were produced using wigs, which do not fully reflect the diversity of real clients’ head shapes, hair types, and service environments. Future research should incorporate various head shapes, hair conditions, and face types to acquire more realistic and expanded data. Additional studies including durability of permanent waves, curl elasticity, and customer satisfaction would contribute to further academic development of men’s permanent wave design and provide sustainable directions for practical application in the beauty industry.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 사회에서 외모는 개인의 사회적 이미지와 정체성을 표현하는 핵 심 요소로 자리 잡고 있으며 그 중 헤어스타일은 시각적 이미지와 정체성 을 표현하는 데 직접적인 영향을 미치는 중요한 요소이다. 최근 남성의 미용에 대한 인식이 크게 변화하면서 과거 단순한 커트 중심의 스타일을 벗어나 외모와 자기표현을 위해 퍼머넌트 웨이브와 염색 등으로 다양한 스타일을 표현하고, 이러한 변화 속에서 헤어스타일은 외 모를 결정짓는 수단이자 자기표현의 중요한 매개체로 자리 잡고 있다.
본 연구에서는 동일한 남성 커트를 기반으로 퍼머넌트 웨이브 시술이 남성 헤어스타일 디자인에 영향을 미치는지 확인하고, 특히 히트 퍼머넌 트 웨이브 중 아이롱 퍼머넌트 웨이브와 콜드 퍼머넌트 웨이브의 기법을 사용하여 손질 방법, 질감 표현 등을 비교 분석함으로써 기술적 차이가 헤어디자인의 완성도와 질감 표현에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 확인하며, 나아가 미용학 분야에의 남성 퍼머넌트 웨이브 디자인 연구의 방향성을 제시함과 동시에 현장 실무에서 응용 가능한 기초자료를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
연구 방법으로는 동일한 커트 스타일을 네 가지 남성 헤어스타일(리 프, 댄디, 리젠트, 스포츠)을 선정하여 아이롱 퍼머넌트 웨이브와 콜드 퍼 머넌트 웨이브를 각각 적용하여 총 12작품을 제작하였고, 이후 각 작품의 질감, 컬 형태, 볼륨감, 형태 유지력 등의 요소를 중심으로 분석하여 시각 적 비교를 통해 표현적 차이를 구체화하였다. 각 스타일별 분석 결과는 다음과 같다.
리프 스타일은 가벼운 층과 흐름이 중요하며, 아이롱 퍼머넌트 웨이브 는 탄력 있는 웨이브와 윤기 있는 질감을 형성하여 자연스러운 흐름을 강 조 하였고, 콜드 퍼머넌트 웨이브는 자연스럽고 부드러운 컬을 표현 하였 지만 건조 후 컬이 느슨해지는 경향을 보였다.
댄디 스타일은 정돈된 실루엣과 부드러운 흐림이 핵심이며, 아이롱 퍼 머넌트는 정교한 웨이브와 볼륨을 형성해 형태 유지력이 높았고, 콜드 퍼 머넌트는 자연스러운 질감 표현에 적합하나 건조 후 유지력이 낮았다.
리젠트 스타일은 뿌리 볼륨과 방향성이 중요하며, 아이롱 퍼머넌트는 탄력과 볼륨을 구현하여 안정적인 형태를 만들었으며, 콜드 퍼머넌트는 부드러운 컬 표현은 가능하나 볼륨감과 방향성 구현에는 제한적이었다.
스포츠 스타일은 짧은 모발 특성상 모발이 뜨거나 뻗기 쉬우며, 아이 롱 퍼머넌트는 탄력있는 볼륨과 방향성을 형성하여 안정적인 형태를 유지 하였고, 콜드 퍼머넌트는 자연스러운 웨이브는 가능하나 컬 유지력과 방 향성이 낮았다.
이러한 결과를 통해 아이롱 퍼머넌트 웨이브는 짧은 모발에서도 탄력 있는 웨이브와 방향성을 형성하는데 유리하고, 뿌리 교정과 형태 유지가 중요한 리젠트, 스포츠 스타일에 효과적이었으며, 콜드 퍼머넌트 웨이브는 롯드의 크기와 배치에 따라 다양한 질감 표현이 가능하고, 내추럴한 질감 표현이 필요한 스타일에 적합한 특징을 보였으며 남성 헤어스타일의 디자 인 방향, 모발 길이, 모질, 원하는 질감에 따른 기술적 선택의 필요성을 제시하였으며, 이는 미용 현장에서 고객 중심의 디자인 제안과 기법 선택 에 실질적인 근거를 제시 하였다.
본 연구는 동일한 커트 스타일에도 시술 기법의 차이에 따라 질감, 형 태, 이미지가 변화할 수 있음을 시각적으로 제시하였고, 퍼머넌트 웨이브 기법이 단순한 시술을 넘어 디자인적 표현에 있어 중요한 변수임을 확인 하였으며, 또한, 남성 헤어스타일 연구에서 상대적으로 부족했던 커트 스 타일에 따른 퍼머넌트 웨이브 디자인을 제시함으로써 학문적 의의를 지닌 다.
기존 선행연구들이 주로 스타일 변천사나 이미지, 선호도 분석에 초점 을 맞추었던 것과 달리, 본 연구는 동일한 커트 스타일을 기반으로 한 비 교 작품을 통해 아이롱 퍼머넌트와 콜드 퍼머넌트의 디자인적 차이를 구 체적으로 제시하였으며, 아울러, 미용 산업 현장에서 디자이너들이 고객의 이미지, 모질, 스타일 목적에 따라 기술적으로 접근할 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하였고, 아이롱 퍼머넌트 웨이브는 형태 유지력과 볼륨 표현이 필요 한 고객에게, 콜드 퍼머넌트 웨이브는 자연스럽고 부드러운 웨이브를 선 호하는 고객에게 적합함을 제시하였다.
본 연구는 커트 스타일과 시술 목적, 고객 이미지에 따른 맞춤형 퍼머 넌트 디자인 제안의 실무적 근거를 마련하고, 미용현장에서 기술적 응용 방향을 제시하였으며, 다만 한정된 가발을 대상으로 한 작품 제작 연구로 진행 되었기 때문에 실제 고객의 두상 형태, 다양한 모질 및 시술 환경의 차이를 충분히 반영하지 못한 한계가 있다.
향후 연구에서는 다양한 두상형태, 모질, 얼굴형 등을 고려한 작품 제 작을 통해 보다 현실적이고 확장된 데이터 확보가 필요하고, 또한 헤어스 타일에 따른 퍼머넌트 웨이브의 유지기간, 컬의 탄력성, 고객만족도 등을 포함한 후속 연구가 이루어 진다면, 남성 헤어스타일에 따른 퍼머넌트 웨 이브 디자인이 학문적으로 더욱 구체화 되며, 미용 산업의 실무 영역에서 지속 가능한 발전 방향을 제시할 수 있을것으로 기대한다.
