The Effects of MZ Generation’s Self-Expression Needs on Hair Management Behavior:
The Mediating Role of Image Making
This study aims to empirically analyze how the MZ generation forms hair management behaviors based on their self-expression needs within contemporary beauty consumption culture, and to examine the mediating role of image making in this process. In recent years, the MZ generation has shown a strong tendency to express individuality and identity through beauty consumption, going beyond simple trend-following or functional consumption. Correspondingly, the beauty market has evolved from a technology-oriented focus toward an emphasis on customer image and experiential value. In this context, understanding why the MZ generation visits hair salons and invests effort in hair styling constitutes an important task for both beauty industry research and consumer culture studies.
This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Seokyeong University on October 29, 2025. For empirical analysis, the sample was composed of individuals from the MZ generation residing primarily in the Seoul area. A total of 328 questionnaires were distributed and collected, and data were gathered through an online self-administered survey. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and SPSS Macro 3.4. The analysis procedures included frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and descriptive statistical analysis. To verify internal consistency and reliability of the survey instruments, Cronbach’s α coefficients were calculated. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted to examine relationships among variables.
The main variables analyzed in this study were self-expression needs (defined as an individual’s desire to express personal image and identity), image making (comprising internal image, external image, and social image), and hair management behavior. Factor analysis revealed that self-expression needs consisted of four factors—conformity, recognition, individuality, and pursuit; hair management behavior consisted of four factors—conformity, aesthetics, individuality, and convenience; and image making consisted of three factors—internal image, external image, and social image. All measurement instruments demonstrated sufficient validity and reliability.
The results indicated that among self-expression needs, the needs for individuality and recognition had the strongest influence on image-making attitudes, and that these image-making attitudes positively affected hair management behavior through a mediating pathway. In other words, when individuals in the MZ generation desire to appear authentic or to make a favorable impression on others, these psychological needs lead to image-making attitudes, which ultimately translate into actual hair management behaviors such as visiting hair salons or changing hairstyles. Moreover, in the direct path from self-expression needs to hair management behavior, conformity and recognition needs were found to be significant, with conformity exerting the strongest direct influence. This suggests that while the MZ generation seeks personal individuality, they are simultaneously influenced by trends and social standards.
The implications of this study are as follows. First, it conceptualizes beauty consumption and hair management behavior among the MZ generation not merely as appearance enhancement, but as acts of identity expression and self-realization. The findings empirically demonstrate the psychological motivations and behavioral patterns through which individuals express themselves, convey images to others, and construct social identities via beauty consumption. Second, by identifying the mediating role of image making between self-expression needs and actual behavior, the study provides explanatory insight into why consumers choose services and engage in behaviors based on desired images rather than on functional beauty services alone. Third, the findings offer practical strategic implications for the beauty industry and service providers, emphasizing the importance of personalized style proposals and marketing strategies that reflect customers’ psychological and image-related needs rather than merely following trends or offering functional benefits. In particular, the results suggest that emphasizing external transformations (such as cuts, colors, and designs) while highlighting individuality and the potential to create a favorable impression on others can be especially effective.
Finally, this study redefines consumers within the changing landscape of consumption culture and the beauty market as socio-cultural agents who actively construct and express self-image and identity, rather than as passive consumption entities. In this regard, the findings provide valuable foundational data not only for the beauty industry, but also for research in consumer psychology, socio-cultural studies, and marketing strategy development.
