This dissertation reinterprets traditional Feng Shui theory by applying the key concepts of form configuration (hyeongse), water configuration (suse), orientation
(jwahyang), and geomantic supplementation (bibo) to contemporary urban landmark architecture. The research examines three categories of case studies: skyscrapers (63 Building, Lotte World Tower, and Burj Khalifa), twin-tower complexes (LG Twin Towers, Hyundai Motor Group Headquarters, and the Petronas Twin Towers), and buildings designed with explicit Feng Shui principles (SK Seorin Building, Hong Kong HSBC Headquarters, and Trump Tower). Through these analyses, the study demonstrates that Feng Shui functions not merely as a traditional belief system grounded in natural symbolism, but also as a theoretical framework applicable to modern environmental and architectural design aimed at enhancing spatial efficiency and functionality.
Feng Shui is understood in this study not as a system of fortune-telling or auspicious judgment, but as a spatial philosophy and environmental design paradigm
that explores the order and harmony between natural environments and human activity. By interpreting mountains and waterforms as processes of condensation
and circulation of qi, this research applies core Feng Shui principles to contemporary urban structures, conceptualizing buildings as mountains and rivers and road networks as water. The study analyzes the correlations among site conditions, spatial configuration, orientation, and water flow, with particular emphasis on sha theory, focusing on the forms and characteristics of surrounding spatial elements. Based on this framework, architectural orientation is reinterpreted through an integrated analysis combining historical maps, satellite imagery, and spatial data to examine interactions between qi flow and urban axes.
The findings indicate that skyscrapers tend to function as central axes of qi concentration within urban environments, with variations in visual tension and
energy intensity influenced by surrounding water flows. Twin-tower structures exhibit complementary symbolic relationships through yin–yang balance, simultaneously reinforcing corporate identity and spatial harmony. Buildings incorporating Feng Shui principles from the design stage actively employ geomantic supplementation strategies to regulate qi circulation between architecture and surrounding environments, thereby enhancing spatial vitality.
These results suggest that Feng Shui can be reestablished as a structural analytical framework for environmental design and urban planning. Concepts such
as form configuration, orientation, and water flow function as mechanisms for interpreting building massing, spatial arrangement, and urban context, while Feng
Shui theory operates as a practical analytical language for coordinating interactions among environment, form, qi, and space. This dissertation demonstrates that an analytical framework grounded in classical Feng Shui texts can serve as an applicable interpretive and design mechanism for contemporary architecture, indicating new possibilities for urban spatial design that mediate between tradition and modernity, philosophy and technology.
