The rapid industrialization and globalization of modern society have promoted a change in social perception of beauty and personality. The Korean beauty industry, especially the hair industry, has steadily changed and developed over the past 100 years according to the demands of the times and cultural trends. The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes and cultural meanings of Korean hair and beauty in each era, from the emergence of 'new women' in the modern era in the 1920s to the globalization of K-beauty in the 2020s, and to examine the industrialization possibility and social value in it.
The study was conducted focusing on literature review, and 'dividing the times-key keywords-social, economic, and cultural changes' were compared and analyzed, focusing on representative events, beauty trends, and socio-cultural backgrounds by period. As a result of the analysis, 'new women', 'short hair', and 'permanent wave' symbolized modern self-consciousness and women's advance into society in the 1920s and 1940s, and popular beauty culture was formed through the spread of movies and broadcasts in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s, the beauty industry became specialized and industrialized with the introduction of foreign technologies such as 'Vidal Wave' and 'Disco Hair', and after the 1990s, the industrial structure was systematized with the introduction of the 'National Technology Certificate' system and the spread of 'Francis'. After the 2010s, 'K-beauty' combined with the Korean Wave and expanded its influence in the global market.
Beyond the simple trend, these changes were closely related to the improvement of women's status in Korean society, changes in the economic structure, spread of popular culture, and the formation of a global network. Beauty is no longer a means of grooming appearance, but acts as a medium of social identity and cultural exchange, and has established itself as a high value-added industry that combines industry, culture, and tourism. In particular, K-beauty is creating a new industrial ecosystem by combining digital technology, sustainable trends, and ESG values.
Therefore, the 100 years of Korean hair and beauty can be understood as a mirror of social change and a miniature version of the growth of the national cultural industry, not just an aesthetic change. This study suggests that the hair and beauty industry can contribute to revitalizing the local economy and strengthening national brand competitiveness through the linkage of culture, industry, and education in the future.
