The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth analysis of representative performances by guitarist George Benson, clarifying the specific characteristics of traditional jazz phrasing inherent in his playing and examining how these characteristics function within the context of Smooth Jazz. George Benson is regarded as a leading guitarist and vocalist who played a significant role in bridging jazz and popular music after the 1970s. Not only did he gain widespread recognition for his outstanding performance skills, but he also helped create a new musical trend that combined the language of traditional jazz with a modern sensibility. In this regard, Benson is considered a key figure in the formation and development of Smooth Jazz.
To gain a deeper understanding of Benson’s musical foundation, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the playing styles of Wes Montgomery and Grant Green, both of whom had a direct influence on him. The performances of these three guitarists share a common basis in traditional jazz phrasing; therefore, this study examines selected tracks that demonstrate such similarities, focusing on their improvisational techniques and guitar-playing characteristics. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with jazz guitarist Andreas Öberg is conducted to explore the extent of Benson’s influence on later generations of guitarists.
This study focuses in particular on the analysis of guitar solos from “Mimosa” on the Smooth Jazz album Body Talk, “Lady” from Give me the night, and “Breezin’” and “Lately” from the live album Absolutely Live. Through this examination, the characteristics of Benson’s improvisational phrasing observed in both studio and live performances are identified.
The findings reveal that, while many contemporary Smooth Jazz guitarists primarily rely on relatively simple phrasing based on the pentatonic scale, George Benson inherits and creatively transforms traditional jazz phrasing. By employing techniques such as octaves, chromatic approach, block chords, unison notes, enclosure, and upper structures, he develops traditional phrasing into his own modern style.
It is hoped that this study will provide a useful foundation for future researchers and performers seeking to deepen their understanding of Smooth Jazz guitar techniques and apply them creatively in their own interpretations.
