This study systematically examines the Twelve Fate Stars (十二運星) through the framework of Yin-Yang and Five Elements (陰陽五行) and the Wang-Shang-Xiu-Su (旺相休囚死) theory.
The dynamic interactions of the Ten Heavenly Stems (十天干) and Twelve Earthly Branches (十二地支) manifest as cycles of growth, maturation, and storage (生長收藏), which can be analyzed in terms of the Twelve Fate Stars.
The concept of the Twelve Fate Stars originates in the Han dynasty Hexagram Qi (卦氣易) and was elaborated in Xiao Ji’s Wuxing Dayi (五行大義). Classical interpretations of Yang-Life Yin-Death (陽生陰死) and Yin-Life Yang-Death (陰生陽死) were further systematized in Ming dynasty texts such as Yihe Zhongmingshu and Wuxing Zhengqi. Later, Xu Ziping’s stem-centered methodology marked a shift from classical to innovative approaches in Chinese astrology.
The Yang-Yin Simultaneous Birth and Death theory (陽陰同生同死), discussed by Liu Ji in Diqianshui, generated scholarly debate and theoretical divergence, particularly regarding the directional movement of Yin stems (陰干). This study proposes the Yin-Yang Sequential Movement theory (陽陰順行說), interpreting Heavenly Stems in natural sequential order, analogous to seasonal cycles, and incorporating trines and hidden stems. Grounded in a natural-philosophical perspective, this approach reinterprets classical theories within a modern framework, aiming to clarify and systematize the Twelve Fate Stars for contemporary application.
Integrating the Twelve Fate Stars into stem-based analysis enhances the understanding of personality, behavioral patterns, interpersonal dynamics, and life development. It provides practitioners with a framework to offer practical guidance that addresses psychological challenges and future uncertainties, bridging traditional destiny analysis with modern counseling needs.
This research not only revisits classical interpretations but also extends their applicability, proposing a unified analytical framework that contributes to both theoretical development and practical utilization of Chinese astrology.
