This study aims to analyze and reinterpret the meaning of Li She Da Chuan (利涉大川, “It is beneficial to cross the great river”) as it appears in seven hexagram statements of the Zhouyi (周易, Book of Changes). The hexagram and line statements of the Zhouyi present principles of appropriate conduct and moral decision-making in specific times and situations, serving as ethical guidelines at turning points in life. Among them, Li She Da Chuan symbolizes a practical and courageous resolution that crosses boundaries and dangers. Just as crossing a river in ancient times signified a crucial transformation for both life and community, within the Zhouyi it represents the decisive moments when individuals and communities face crisis and change.
This study examines seven hexagrams in which the phrase appears—Shui Tian Xu (水天需), Tian Huo Tong Ren (天火同人), Shan Feng Gu (山風蠱), Shan Tian Da Xu (山天大畜), Feng Lei Yi (風雷益), Feng Shui Huan (風水渙), and Feng Ze Zhong Fu (風澤中孚)—revealing that each presents distinct conditions for action: patience and trust, solidarity, reform, restraint, public virtue, integration, and sincerity. Through this, Li She Da Chuan is interpreted not as a mere divinatory phrase of fortune or misfortune, but as an ethical guide to prepared action.
In contrast, the study also analyzes Bu Li She Da Chuan (不利涉大川) in the Song hexagram (訟卦), which warns against reckless action and emphasizes the ethics of moderation and mediation. The reinterpretation of these principles within a modern context shows that the practical ethics embodied in Li She Da Chuan can serve as a philosophical guideline for transforming crises into opportunities across diverse spheres such as politics, society, environment, and leadership.
Thus, Li She Da Chuan functions not merely as a symbolic expression, but as a philosophical and ethical principle that encourages both personal insight and collective responsibility. At the individual level, it offers the wisdom of timely decision and proactive endeavor; at the societal level, it embodies the moral courage and practical ethics necessary to overcome structural crises. The act of “crossing the great river” implies risk and uncertainty, yet also teaches that benefit lies in well-prepared challenge. As such, the phrase continues to convey a timeless philosophical message urging prepared determination and responsible action amid the transitions and uncertainties of modern life.
