This study aims to examine how the role of the theatre director has expanded in contemporary performing arts by adopting Richard Schechner’s theory of ‘Restored Behavior’ as its central analytical framework. In a contemporary performance environment where multiple layers such as body, image, media, technology, and community intersect beyond the text-centered paradigm of representational theatre, the director no longer remains a mere interpreter of the dramatic text but functions as a holistic creative agent who organizes and coordinates the structure and processes of performance. Nevertheless, despite this transformation of the role, a theoretical gap still remains in systematic research that places the director’s role itself at the center of inquiry.
Grounded in this problem awareness, the present thesis adopts the theory of ‘Restored Behavior’, developed by Schechner, the founder of performance studies, as a key analytical device in order to fill this theoretical gap and to systematically investigate the expansion of the director’s role. ‘Restored Behavior’ is a concept that understands actions as independent units that are separated from everyday contexts and can be repeated, coded, and rearranged, and thus provides an effective theoretical tool for analyzing how directors select, manipulate, and integrate various performance elements in rehearsal and workshop processes.
On the basis of this theoretical framework, the study analyzes the creative practices of such contemporary master directors as Robert Wilson, Robert Lepage, Pina Bausch, and Ariane Mnouchkine. As a result, it identifies that Wilson can be categorized as a “structural designer” who constructs stage architecture around visual elements; Lepage as a “system coordinator” who integrates technology and the body; Bausch as a “code designer of bodily language” who codifies bodily experience through repetition and variation; and Mnouchkine as a “ritual leader” who organizes collective creation processes.
In conclusion, the foregoing discussion systematically demonstrates that the director is not merely a subject of text interpretation but a complex creative agent who materializes and structures performative acts. Through the multilayered differentiation according to the materials they handle and the modes of intervention—such as structural designer (Wilson), system coordinator (Lepage), code designer of bodily language (Bausch), and ritual leader (Mnouchkine)—the study empirically shows that the director’s role has expanded toward coordination, design, and regulation. Although the research is limited in that it is grounded primarily in theory-centered case analysis, it bears academic significance in that it examines the director’s role from the perspective of processual and structural action. Furthermore, the study is expected to provide a valid theoretical foundation for future research on directors and for analyzing the collaborative structures of contemporary performance-making practices.
