This study aimed to develop a quantitative human health risk assessment methodology for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that may be detected in the surface layer of synthetic rubber flooring used in children’s playgrounds. To this end, a multi-pathway and multi-age-group risk assessment framework was established by incorporating age-specific behavioral characteristics of children and realistic exposure scenarios reflecting actual playground use. A quantitative assessment scheme was constructed by applying toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) for mixture toxicity evaluation and by adopting both central tendency exposure (CTE) and reasonable maximum exposure (RME) scenarios. In addition, age-stratified exposure factors and an automated parameter application approach were introduced to enhance the policy relevance and practical applicability of the proposed methodology. The developed framework provides a practical tool for supporting environmental health policies aimed at protecting children and can be readily extended to other contaminants, such as heavy metals and volatile organic compounds, as well as to various environmental media.
