This study investigates the relational structure of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) communication in the beauty industry by comparing brand-driven and consumer-driven discourse. While prior research has typically examined corporate ESG strategies or consumer perceptions separately, this study addresses this limitation by analyzing both discourse structures in an integrated manner, thereby empirically identifying the structural gap in ESG communication between brands and consumers.
Data were collected from Naver News (representing brand and corporate discourse) and Naver Blog (representing consumer discourse) using “ESG” and “beauty” as core keywords. After data refinement and preprocessing, a text-network analysis was conducted. The analysis employed TF-IDF weighting, CONCOR (Convergence of Iterated Correlations), and the Louvain modularity algorithm to identify the key terms, cluster structures, and network properties within each ESG domain (E, S, and G).
The results show that ESG discourse in news articles forms a top-down structure centered on institutional and policy-oriented keywords such as “carbon neutrality,” “disclosure,” and “ethical management.” In contrast, blog discourse demonstrates a bottom-up structure driven by consumer practices, featuring keywords such as “refill,” “vegan,” and “cruelty-free.” This contrast indicates that corporate ESG communication remains focused on formal reporting and disclosure, whereas consumer discourse expands toward everyday practices and value-driven consumption.
This study contributes to the academic understanding of ESG communication in the beauty industry by revealing the structural asymmetry between institutional messages and experiential practices. Furthermore, by applying text-network analysis, the study demonstrates the potential of data-driven approaches in ESG communication research and provides practical implications for designing more participatory and interactive ESG strategies between brands and consumers.
