This study investigates the effects of scalp care knowledge levels on consumer behavior selection and management satisfaction. In modern society, with the rapid changes in lifestyle environments and the increasing interest in health, scalp health and hair loss have emerged as critical factors influencing not only appearance but also psychological well-being and social relationships. Although the scalp care and hair loss market continues to grow steadily, many domestic consumers still lack sufficient information and education, often resulting in inappropriate scalp care practices or problems caused by unsuitable product use.
To examine these issues, this research analyzed how the level of scalp care knowledge affects consumers’ behavioral choices and satisfaction with their scalp management. Measurement items were refined and supplemented by the researcher based on an extensive literature review to fit the research objectives. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from 292 beauty consumers aged 20 and older in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 with different analytical methods depending on the research questions.
The main findings are as follows.
First, among the general characteristics of the respondents, the majority were female, most were in their thirties, and a high proportion held a four-year college degree or higher, with monthly income levels mostly ranging from 2 to 4 million KRW.
Second, factor analysis revealed two factors for scalp care knowledge level—“problem factor diagnosis” and “theoretical knowledge”; two factors for behavioral choice—“shampoo use habit” and “home care habit”; and one factor for management satisfaction—“satisfaction.”
Third, analysis by demographic characteristics showed that females demonstrated higher levels of knowledge, behavioral engagement, and satisfaction compared to males.
Fourth, within scalp care knowledge, physiological, environmental, genetic, and physical/chemical diagnostic factors affected behavioral choice differently. Physiological factors positively influenced both shampoo use and home care habits, while environmental factors affected shampoo habits, and genetic factors affected home care habits positively.
Fifth, within theoretical knowledge, cognitive knowledge positively influenced home care habits, and product-related knowledge positively affected shampoo use habits. Among behavioral choices, only home care habits showed a significant positive effect on management satisfaction, whereas shampoo habit had a negative impact. Overall, scalp care knowledge level had a statistically significant positive effect on management satisfaction.
These findings empirically confirm that scalp care knowledge significantly influences behavioral choices and satisfaction formation in scalp management. The study suggests that differentiated educational content and the establishment of proper behavioral habits can enhance consumer satisfaction. The results can serve as a foundational reference for developing customized scalp care programs, improving professional management center services, and strengthening structured consumer education. This research provides practical implications for creating effective educational and service strategies to advance the scalp care industry and improve consumer satisfaction.
