Recently, South Korea’s beauty industry has experienced rapid growth amid the global spread of K-culture and the social trend emphasizing individuality. Beauty services have evolved beyond mere appearance management to become a medium for self-expression and identity, leading consumers to actively seek personalized and customized services. These changes demand a new paradigm across the beauty industry, highlighting the increasing importance of service providers’ professionalism, environmental quality, and the satisfaction perceived by customers.
Although the shared hair salon model had already emerged before, it has expanded significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic due to heightened hygiene awareness, the universal adoption of non-face-to-face reservation systems, and the growing independence of hair designers. As an alternative to traditional franchise or exclusive-designer salons, shared salons allow customers to freely select their designers while pursuing both affordability and convenience. However, to achieve sustainable growth in a highly competitive environment, shared hair salons must move beyond the simple concept of space sharing and strategically manage service quality to enhance both customer perception and satisfaction.
Strengthening the service competitiveness of shared hair salons requires comprehensive consideration of customers’ subjective experiences, perceptions, and satisfaction formed during the service process. Service quality encompasses not only the technical skills of designers but also external factors such as the salon environment, hygiene, and accessibility, all of which directly affect customers’ perceptions and satisfaction levels. Therefore, empirically identifying the structural relationship among service quality, customer perception, and customer satisfaction in shared hair salons holds significant implications for developing practical strategies in the industry.
Accordingly, this study aims to empirically analyze the relationships among service quality, customer perception, and customer satisfaction in shared hair salons and to provide foundational data that contribute to enhancing service competitiveness and sustainable development in the beauty industry. Specifically, the study examines (1) the effect of service quality on customer perception, (2) the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction, and (3) the effect of customer perception on customer satisfaction.
The sample survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire targeting individuals in their 20s and 30s who had experience using shared hair salons in Seoul. A total of 500 valid responses were used for the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0, employing frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The findings are as follows. First, regarding the general characteristics of respondents, the majority were female, in their 20s, unmarried, and had “university enrollment or graduation” as their highest education level. The most common occupation was “student,” and more than half reported a monthly income below 2 million KRW. In terms of usage characteristics, most respondents visited shared salons once a month, with a monthly management cost between 50,000 and 100,000 KRW. Second, factor and reliability analyses revealed two subfactors for service quality (“technical quality” and “environmental quality”), two for customer perception (“professionalism pursuit” and “development pursuit”), and three for customer satisfaction (“designer satisfaction,” “service satisfaction,” and “marketing satisfaction”). All factors showed high validity and reliability. Third, descriptive statistics indicated positive evaluations overall, with mean scores of 4.04 for service quality, 4.04 for customer perception, and 4.11 for customer satisfaction. Differences by demographic variables were partially significant: customer perception differed by education level (development pursuit), and customer satisfaction differed by gender (marketing satisfaction) and occupation (service satisfaction). Fourth, correlation analysis showed that the “technical quality” of service had the highest positive correlation with “professionalism pursuit” (r = .758) and “designer satisfaction” (r = .694), while “environmental quality” was most strongly correlated with “development pursuit” and “marketing satisfaction” (r = .570). Fifth, regression analysis revealed that both technical and environmental quality positively influenced professionalism and development pursuit. Specifically, technical quality had a stronger impact on professionalism, while environmental quality had a greater effect on development pursuit. Sixth, both technical and environmental quality had significant positive effects on all three factors of customer satisfaction—designer satisfaction, service satisfaction, and marketing satisfaction—indicating that improvements in technical competence and physical environment enhance overall customer satisfaction. Seventh, customer perception positively influenced all dimensions of customer satisfaction. Professionalism pursuit strongly affected designer and service satisfaction, while development pursuit more strongly influenced marketing satisfaction.
These results confirm that service quality, customer perception, and customer satisfaction in shared hair salons are closely interconnected. Service quality, based on technical and environmental factors, leads to customer satisfaction through the mediating role of customer perception. Therefore, operators of shared hair salons should enhance customer satisfaction through strategies that strengthen technical skills, systematically manage environmental factors, and improve customer perception via effective communication and tailored management strategies. Furthermore, continuous quality control, differentiated service offerings, and customer-centered management approaches are essential to reinforce long-term relationships and enhance overall industry competitiveness.
