This study explored the experiences of Chinese professional women in online group dance/movement therapy (DMT) using a case study methodology. The research aimed to elucidate the healing process as shaped by the interaction of participants’ subjective experiences, therapist dynamics, and the online environment. Participants consisted of seven Chinese professional women aged 25-35. The online group DMT program, titled ’Body-Mind Care’—designed to enhance bodily awareness and promote psychological well-being—was implemented for this demographic, comprising a total of 8 sessions held once weekly, each lasting 90 minutes.
Qualitative data on the participants’ experiences in the online group DMT program were collected through participant interviews, therapist notes, and session recordings. Quantitative data from the DASS-21 and MAIA-2 scales were utilized to examine changes among participants and to triangulate the qualitative findings. The analysis yielded six overarching themes: 1) Depleted Mind-Body and the Formation of Therapeutic Motivation, 2) Coexistence of Technological Alienation and Psychological Safety, 3) Mirroring, resonance, and validation of existence mediated by the monitor, 4) Catalysts for Change through Structure, Facilitation, and Symbolism, 5) Transition from active acceptance to creative participation, and 6) Generation of Embodied Meaning and Integration into Life.
This study investigated the multifaceted phenomena of online DMT for Chinese professional women. The findings revealed that participants, starting from a state of mind-body depletion due to socio-cultural pressures, engaged in a transformative narrative. They explored and expressed somatized suffering through culturally familiar, embodiment-based activities, while evolving into active agents within the ambivalent conditions of the online environment—which served as both barrier and conduit. This transformation emerged from a dynamically interactive ’online healing field,’ co-created by the therapist’s cyclical practice of ’context-diagnosis-strategy-adjustment’ and a program design deeply responsive to both the participants’ context and the specificities of the online medium. By proposing this triadic interaction model, the study clarifies that the efficacy of online DMT stems not from a single element but from a systemic dynamism. It holds significance in providing a theoretical framework and practical guidelines for how culturally attuned and media-savvy arts-based interventions can address the mental health needs of the digital age.
By examining the online DMT experiences of Chinese women in full-time employment, this study highlights a narrative where structural challenges, the transformative potential of embodied healing, and the emergence of personal agency within digital spaces converge. The findings offer implications that extend beyond the specific case, contributing to both the theory and practice of cross-cultural telehealth interventions.
