The densification results and resulting properties of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites are strongly affected by the architecture of fiber preforms and their internal structural characteristics. In this study, the influence of three-dimensional needle-punched preform architecture on the densification characteristics and mechanical and thermal properties of C/C composites was systematically investigated. To isolate the effect of preform structure, three different preforms were designed by varying fiber composition and UD/web configurations while maintaining identical fabrication and evaluation conditions.
The preforms were fabricated using combinations of carbon fibers and oxidized PAN fibers, and three-dimensional reinforcement was introduced through a needle-punching process. All preforms were densified using an iso-thermal chemical vapor infiltration (ISO-CVI) process, and selected specimens were further densified through phenolic resin impregnation–carbonization. The densification characteristics were evaluated based on pre- and post-densification density characteristics. Mechanical properties were assessed through compressive and flexural strength tests, and thermal properties were evaluated by measuring specific heat and thermal conductivity.
The results showed that preform architecture had a significant influence on the densification characteristics and final density levels of the C/C composites. Mechanical properties varied depending on the preform structure, indicating that fiber combination and internal structural continuity play an important role in load transfer behavior. In particular, hybrid preforms exhibited superior mechanical performance despite relatively lower density levels, suggesting that increased density does not necessarily lead to improved mechanical strength. Thermal property evaluation revealed that thermal conductivity and specific heat characteristics were also influenced by preform architecture, reflecting differences in internal structural uniformity.
Overall, this study demonstrates that three-dimensional needle-punched preform design is a critical factor governing densification characteristics and the mechanical and thermal performance of C/C composites. The findings provide fundamental insights for optimizing preform architecture in the design of high-performance C/C composites for aircraft brake and high-temperature structural applications.
