국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 아우구스티누스(Aurelius Augustinus, 354–430)의 사유에서 핵심 개념인 intentio를 중심으로, 인간이 어떻게 세계를 인식하며 그 지향의 방향성이 인간 존재를 어떻게 규정하는지를 고찰하였다. 아우구스티누스에 따르면 영혼은 감각적 단계(visio corporalis)에서 외부 사물을 지각하고, 내면적 단계(visio spiritalis)에서 기억과 사유를 결합하며, 지성적 단계(visio intellectualis)에서 신적 진리를 관조한다. 이 모든 과정에서 intentio는 주체가 대상을 향해 자신을 집중시키고 결합시키는 내적 원리로 작용한다.
Intentio는 단순한 인식 작용을 넘어, 영혼이 ‘무엇을 향해 사랑하는가’에 따라 그 존재의 방향과 질서를 결정짓는 실존적 동력이다. 감각적 욕망(cupiditas)에 매몰된 지향은 하강을, 신을 향한 사랑(caritas)은 상승을 낳는다. 따라서 참된 인식은 올바른 지향 안에서만 가능하며, 존재의 정립이 선행될 때 그 의미가 완성된다.
본 연구는 이러한 intentio의 역할을 분석함으로써, 인식과 존재, 사랑과 진리를 통합하는 아우구스티누스의 사유를 조명한다. 특히 근대 이후 주체–객체의 분리로 인한 인식과 존재의 단절 속에서, 인간이 관계와 사랑의 운동 안에서 다시 진리를 향해 나아갈 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다.

This study investigates the concept of intentio, a central notion in the thought of Aurelius Augustine (354–430), focusing on how human beings perceive the world and how the direction of their intentional orientation determines their mode of existence. According to Augustine, the soul perceives external objects at the sensory level (visio corporalis), integrates memory and thought at the interior level (visio spiritalis), and contemplates divine truth at the intellectual level (visio intellectualis). Throughout these stages, intentio functions as the inner principle by which the subject concentrates upon and unites itself with the object.
Beyond a mere act of cognition, intentio serves as an existential force that determines the orientation and order of being according to what the soul loves. When directed toward sensual desire (cupiditas), the soul descends; when directed toward the love of God (caritas), it ascends. Thus, true knowledge is possible only within a right intention, and the meaning of cognition is fulfilled only when the foundation of being is rightly established.
By analyzing the operation of intentio, this study sheds light on Augustine’s integrative vision that unites knowledge and being, love and truth. In the context of modern philosophy—where the separation between subject and object has deepened the rupture between knowledge and existence—Augustine’s concept of intentio discloses the possibility of recovering the movement toward truth within the dynamic of relation and love.
