This paper aims to offer a theological examination of the analogical relationship between the communion of the divine Persons and the communion of the children of God, thereby exploring the practical applicability of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Trinitarian theology. By identifying kenosis as its central concept, the study seeks to demonstrate that kenosis can be applied analogically not only to the relational life of the Triune God but also to the unity among the children of God within the ecclesial community.
Traditionally, the event expressed in the confession that “the Word became flesh,” namely the kenosis of God, has been understood as pertaining exclusively to Jesus Christ. Within von Balthasar’s Trinitarian theology, however, the principle of self-emptying is also discernible in the eternal mode of existence of the Triune God prior to creation. Accordingly, this paper focuses on the development of von Balthasar’s Theo-Drama in order to present an integrated account of the kenotic dynamism inherent in the inner-Trinitarian relations and the mystery of self-emptying revealed in the earthly life of Jesus Christ.
This kenotic mode of existence of the Triune God can be analogically applied to the mode of existence of the children of God who follow Christ, and kenosis is thus proposed as a spiritual attitude to be realized within the community. To further concretize this claim, the paper examines Mary, presented as the archetype of the Church, and demonstrates that her integral and personal obedience constitutes a paradigm of the kenotic way of life. According to von Balthasar, Mary embodies the humility, obedience, and spirituality of self-emptying that the Church is called to possess.
Furthermore, this paper understands the Church as a community in which all the faithful share communion in God and are united with one another, and argues that within this community the children of God participate in the life of the Triune God through the Eucharist(Eucharistia), whereby an ontological unity as “one body” is realized in the Church. According to von Balthasar, the Eucharist is the means through which the children of God truly participate in Christ’s self-emptying.
In conclusion, by elucidating the analogy between the communion of the divine Persons and the communion of the children of God, this study reconsiders the theological and practical significance of the kenotic way of life in a contemporary ecclesial context marked by communal fragmentation and individualistic faith. In doing so, it proposes an essential direction for the renewal of the Church community and contributes to contemporary theological discourse as well as to practical and spiritual reflection.
