We are constantly confronted with things and ideas that, while they do not exist in reality, compel us to speak of them as if they do. From mythical entities like the phoenix or the dragon to notions such as nothingness, blindness, negation, privation, and relation, these do not belong to the realm of real beings. Yet, they undeniably function within the structure of our thought. They operate meaningfully within the frameworks of language, logic, and cognition, playing active roles despite their lack of real existence. These entities - beings that are thinkable despite not existing - are called beings of reason(entia rationis). But how, then, can such beings be said to exist?
Starting from this question, this thesis aims to examine the philosophical status and ontological structure of beings of reason, with a particular focus on the metaphysics of Francisco Suárez(1548-1617).
While building upon the traditions of medieval scholastic metaphysics, Suárez opened a new horizon in metaphysics by exploring the tension between reason and being. He moved beyond the traditional metaphysical concern with actual reality. Instead, he placed those entities that come into being only through the operations of the intellect at the center of philosophical inquiry. For Suárez, beings of reason are not merely fictions or imagined constructs but entities that are constituted, represented, and directed by reason. They are entities that function indispensably within logical structures, ethical judgments, and even mathematical definitions.
To Suárez, beings of reason were not secondary anomalies to be excluded from metaphysics but rather a decisive key to interrogating the very foundations of ontology. This study aims to conceptually ground the idea of “of reason”(rationis) by analyzing its meaning from a hermeneutic and ontological perspective. It then investigates the position of beings of reason within Suárez’s Disputationes Metaphysicae. Finally, it traces how his concept of these entities helped shape subsequent developments in the broader history of philosophy.
This thesis pays particular attention to the fact that beings of reason “function as beings despite not existing in reality.” This paradox reveals the multilayered and equivocal nature of the concept of being itself. It also supports the idea that metaphysics is not confined to what really exists but must also account for whatever is thinkable. Moreover, by reflecting on the philosophical traces that beings of reason have left in classical metaphysics, this thesis explores how this concept can offer theoretical tools for engaging with contemporary issues-particularly those surrounding digital technologies and virtual realities.
Ultimately, this study focuses on the philosophical fissure between being and thought, reality and non-reality. It poses an ontological challenge: to inquire into the modes of being of those things which, while they do not exist, can nonetheless only be spoken of as though they do. Beings of reason are not only the site where metaphysics must begin anew in our time but also the threshold at which thought about being can be opened once again.
