This thesis examines how painterly images in Jean-Luc Godard’s first-period films (1959–1967) intersect and collide with cinematic temporality, perceptual structures, and affective rhythms to generate new modes of visual thought.
Rather than merely juxtaposing the heterogeneous media of painting and cinema, Godard reconsiders the identity of film through intermedial experiments that expose and transform the material properties of each medium. By inserting canonical works by Picasso, Renoir, Matisse, and Chagall directly into the cinematic frame, or by appropriating their chromatic, compositional, and textural principles, he transforms painting into a central conceptual device that reconfigures the filmic image. Focusing on key works such as À bout de souffle, Une femme est une femme, Vivre sa vie, Le Mépris, and Pierrot le fou, this thesis analyzes painterly citations through mise-en-scène, chromatic contrasts, split screens, textual insertions, and the inclusion of still images. Through this analysis, it demonstrates that painting in early Godard functions not as decorative reference but as an agent that interrupts temporal flow, generates tension between heterogeneous image regimes, and reorganizes the viewer’s perceptual field. Godard’s montage is therefore not a conventional narrative linkage but a cognitive device in which diverse signifying systems—painting, literature, photography, commercial logos—collide within a single frame to produce new meanings. Such strategies of juxtaposition and rupture correspond to what Ágnes Pethő has termed the “palimpsestuous image,” offering a productive framework for understanding how film sutures together multiple temporal strata and parallel sensory orders. The findings reveal that painterly citation in Godard’s first period initiates a significant aesthetic and philosophical transformation in three respects. First, the friction between the stasis of painting and the movement of cinema destabilizes the notion of linear time, disrupting boundaries between past and present, representation and record. Second, painting operates less as an explanatory tool than as an affective vector that precedes narrative articulation and shapes how viewers perceive the image. Third, when painterly images interact with commercial emblems, textual fragments, and voice-over narration, the film becomes not a vehicle for conveying meaning but a reflective apparatus that exposes the conditions under which meaning is produced. Ultimately, this thesis identifies the painterly citations in Godard’s early films as a key intermedial practice through which cinema becomes an experimental space for rethinking perception, time, and subjectivity. Nevertheless, the study’s focus on the first period captures only part of Godard’s broader aesthetic trajectory. His later work expands these image experiments into new political, documentary, and technological domains—ranging from the militant image practices of the second period, to the video and television experiments of the third, and culminating in the comprehensive audiovisual philosophy of Histoire(s) du cinéma(1998). Future research should therefore extend this inquiry to encompass Godard’s entire image-thinking across periods, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of how modern image systems emerge through the continual layering of cinema, painting, literature, photography, and philosophy.
