The purpose of this study was to develop a horticulture-based Christian mindfulness program for adults with traumatic experiences and to examine its effectiveness. Individuals who have experienced trauma often suffer from various psychological sequelae, including anxiety, depression, self-blame, helplessness, emotional instability, and low self-acceptance. In response, this study sought to develop an integrative intervention program that combines the therapeutic characteristics of horticultural activities with the principles of mindfulness—awareness and acceptance—to promote psychological recovery and emotional stability among adults with traumatic experiences.
Based on a six-stage program development model (planning, needs assessment, design, pilot study, implementation, and evaluation), relevant literature was reviewed and a 12-session program was developed. Content validity was evaluated by a panel of ten experts in counseling, horticultural therapy, mindfulness, and Christian counseling. A pilot study was conducted with 13 adults with traumatic experiences from Region D, demonstrating therapeutic effects and high participant satisfaction across sessions.
For the main study, 30 adults with traumatic experiences were assigned to either an experimental group (n=15) or a control group (n=15). Following implementation of the finalized program, repeated measures analysis of variance (Repeated Measures ANOVA) was conducted to examine changes in post-traumatic symptoms, depression, anxiety, self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-efficacy, and mindfulness across pretest, posttest, and follow-up assessments in the experimental group.
The results indicated that participation in the program led to significant reductions in post-traumatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety, as well as significant increases in self-awareness, self- acceptance, and mindfulness. These effects were maintained at follow-up. Although self-efficacy increased at posttest, this improvement was not sustained at follow-up. Overall, the findings provide empirical evidence that the horticulture-based Christian mindfulness program is effective in reducing post-traumatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety, and in enhancing self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-efficacy, and mindfulness among adults with traumatic experiences.
Quantitative analyses revealed that, compared to the control group, the experimental group showed significantly greater reductions in depression and anxiety, along with significant improvements in mindfulness, self-acceptance, and self-efficacy at posttest. Follow-up analyses indicated sustained decreases in depression and anxiety and continued improvements in mindfulness and self-acceptance, while changes in self-efficacy were limited, possibly due to the duration and intensity of the intervention.
Qualitative findings further revealed experiences of emotional stability, healing through connection with nature, a sense of accomplishment through creative expression, and enhanced stress regulation abilities. These results suggest that the horticulture- based Christian mindfulness program serves as an effective integrative intervention model that facilitates psychological and emotional recovery among adults with traumatic experiences. This study contributes to the development of trauma-informed, participant-centered intervention programs that integrate horticulture and mindfulness, thereby enhancing applicability in counseling and therapeutic settings. Future research is recommended to expand the program to diverse trauma types and age groups and to examine long-term effects through a more comprehensive, multi-layered healing model.
