The previous Korean abstract for this thesis describes a study on how social isolation influences smartphone overdependence through the mediating role of psychological need regulation in a Korean adult sample. Drawing on self‑determination theory, the study examines whether social isolation undermines the satisfaction and regulation of basic psychological needs, thereby increasing the risk of smartphone overdependence. The study surveyed 500 individuals aged 15 to 59 years (250 men, 250 women) using an online panel between June 11 and 17, 2025. Social isolation was measured with the Loneliness and Social Isolation Scale (LSIS‑6; Cronbach’s α=.79), smartphone overdependence with the integrated Smartphone Overdependence Scale (S‑Scale; Cronbach’s α=.90), and psychological need regulation with the Psychological Need Regulation Scale (Cronbach’s α=.95). Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and PROCESS macro v4.2, and mediation effects were tested via bootstrapping (5,000 samples, 95% confidence intervals). The results showed that social isolation had a significant positive effect on smartphone overdependence (B=.515, p<.001, R²=.090) and a significant negative effect on psychological need regulation (B=−2.283, p<.001, R²=.361), indicating that higher social isolation is associated with lower psychological need regulation and higher smartphone overdependence. When social isolation and psychological need regulation were entered simultaneously, both social isolation (B=.370, p<.001) and psychological need regulation (B=−.064, p<.008) significantly predicted smartphone overdependence (R²=.103), and the indirect effect of social isolation on smartphone overdependence via psychological need regulation was significant (95% CI [.019, .152]). Parallel multiple mediation analyses further revealed that all three subcomponents of psychological need regulation—awareness of need fulfillment (95% CI [.015, .145]), evaluation of need value (95% CI [.013, .128]), and adjustment of fulfillment criteria (95% CI [.008, .104])—had significant mediating effects. Gender‑specific analyses indicated significant indirect effects both for men (n=250; 95% CI [.032, .195]) and women (n=250; 95% CI [.010, .128]).These findings empirically demonstrate that social isolation contributes to smartphone overdependence through decreased psychological need regulation, highlighting smartphone overdependence as an outcome of need thwarting and regulatory failure rather than a mere issue of behavioral control. The study suggests that prevention and intervention programs for smartphone overdependence should combine strategies for restoring social networks with interventions aimed at strengthening individuals’ psychological need regulation capacities, thereby providing a multidimensional psychological framework for addressing smartphone overdependence in the digital age.
