The recent development of generative artificial intelligence has led to the emergence of composition tools capable of generating complete songs from text prompts and minimal input. In particular, services such as ‘Suno’ integrate lyrics, style prompts, meta-tags, and audio references to automatically produce finished demos that include melody, harmony, arrangement, vocals, and mix, thereby greatly enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of music creation. In practice, however, such tools are often treated either as performance-oriented technologies—evaluated mainly by how fast and how well they generate music—or as experimental gadgets, and there is still a lack of research that examines their relationship with role-based creative practices such as lyric writing, singing, instrumentation, and drumming.
This study views Suno not as a mere automatic composition engine but as a composition system that reorganizes role-based creation, and aims to analyze how each creative role can collaborate with Suno in terms of concrete workflows. First, the historical development of composition tools is reviewed to show how the transition from notation-based tools to mechanical and electronic instruments, digital audio workstations, and virtual instrument/sample-based environments has reshaped the roles and workflows of composers. Then Suno is selected as the primary research object, and its operating principles, version evolution, main interface tabs and functions, as well as prompt and meta-tag structures are examined as a technical foundation for role-based use. The core analytical units are four roles—lyricist, vocalist, instrumentalist/arranger, and drummer/rhythm player. For each role, the study distinguishes between text-based and audio-based workflows and presents step-by-step procedures and practical examples using Suno’s Create, Studio, and various editing functions.
The results show that role-based work with Suno has clear advantages in terms of creative efficiency, accessibility, and reproducibility. Lyricists can design narrative and dynamics through meta-tags and lyric structure; vocalists can propose melodies and emotional contours via text or audio guides; instrumental and drum roles can provide chord progressions and grooves as audio references to define the skeletal and temporal structure of a piece. By selectively replacing or extending specific sections with Studio’s editing tools, creators can finely adjust “how far humans design and from which point the system is delegated” for each role. At the same time, several limitations also emerge, including sonic biases arising from Suno’s training data and presets, the difficulty of prompt design, and unresolved issues of copyright and responsibility.
By describing a Suno-centered creative process from a role-based perspective, this study argues that the introduction of generative AI composition tools should be understood not as a matter of replacing human creators, but as a matter of role redistribution and collaboration design. The four proposed role-specific workflows and examples offer a practical framework for using Suno as a tool for education, creation, and collaboration in applied music contexts, and may serve as a reference for future comparative studies of AI music tools, empirical research with students and professional creators, and further work linking AI-based creation to copyright and industrial change.
