This study was carried out on garden plant consumers in S. Korea to identify differences in purchase preferences according to settlement scale, based on an empirical survey conducted in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do and Gwangju Metropolitan City, classified into large cities, mid-sized cities, and rural areas. The demographic characteristics of the survey sample showed that males accounted for 67.0% and females for 33.0%, with respondents in their 50s and 60s comprising approximately 49.5% of the total. This gender and age imbalance reflects the survey locations, which primarily included garden-related workshops, seminars, educational centers, landscape plant farms, garden centers, florists, and traditional markets. The high proportion of middle-aged and older respondents suggests that garden plant consumption in S. Korea is more strongly associated with leisure activities and emotional well-being among middle-aged and senior groups than with youth-oriented consumption. In terms of educational background, respondents with a university degree represented the largest group(52.2%), followed by high school graduates(38.5%), while those with graduate-level or middle school education accounted for smaller proportions. This distribution indicates that garden plant purchasing and gardening activities are more prevalent among individuals with higher educational attainment. Regarding residential location, Suncheon-si accounted for the largest share of respondents(30.2%), which appears to be related to the city’s relatively advanced garden culture that has developed since the 2010s compared to surrounding municipalities. Income analysis showed that middle- and lower-income groups constituted the majority of respondents, and more than half reported annual garden plant expenditures of less than 100,000 KRW. These findings suggest that garden plants are not perceived as luxury goods limited to high-income groups, but rather as everyday items used for emotional enrichment and improvement of living spaces. Gardening experience was limited for many respondents, with 51.7% reporting no experience or less than one year of experience, while only 19.4% had more than eight years of experience. This indicates that gardening is generally practiced as an intermittent, lifestyle-oriented activity rather than as a professional or continuous pursuit. Gardening activity patterns differed clearly by settlement scale. In large cities, gardening tended to focus on routine, low-intensity maintenance; in rural areas, it was closely linked to seasonal cycles and daily life; and in mid-sized cities, characteristics of both patterns were combined. Gardening frequency showed statistically significant differences by settlement scale, suggesting that gardening behavior is shaped more by residential- xviii environment—such as housing type, spatial structure, and daily life rhythms—than by individual preferences alone. The primary motivation for purchasing garden plants was family-oriented use, followed by purposes related to hobbies, rest, garden beautification, and psychological healing. This indicates that garden plants function less as tools for personal taste expression and more as mediators that enhance emotional satisfaction and the quality of shared living environments. Planting spaces were relatively evenly distributed among outdoor gardens, balconies, and indoor spaces; however, large cities favored balconies and indoor spaces, rural areas emphasized outdoor gardens, and mid-sized cities exhibited a mixed spatial structure. These spatial differences appear to influence preferences for plant size and maintenance requirements. Regarding purchase channels, florists were the most common source of garden plants, indicating that direct, offline purchasing remains dominant despite the expansion of online distribution. Key purchase decision factors included quality, price, rarity, and personal preference, demonstrating that garden plant selection is driven not solely by cost considerations but by trust in quality and emotional value. Respondents showed a strong preference for domestically produced and native plants, while many expressed indifference toward plant lifespan, suggesting that ease of management and spatial suitability are prioritized over growth duration. Preferences for plant size were concentrated on small and medium-sized plants, with relatively low preference for large trees. This reflects a perception of garden plants as everyday elements integrated into living spaces rather than as components of large-scale landscape construction. Rural areas showed a stronger inclination toward tree-based plants, whereas urban areas preferred small, indoor-compatible plants. In terms of aesthetic characteristics, respondents favored natural forms, medium saturation and neutral tones, soft textures, and subtle fragrances, indicating a preference for visual and emotional stability over strong colors, scents, or dramatic forms. From the perspective of environmental adaptability and maintenance, respondents showed lower preference for plants that require high climate adaptability or are difficult to transplant, and a clear preference for low to medium-maintenance plants. This suggests that contemporary garden plant consumption prioritizes minimizing management burden rather than maximizing cultivation challenges. Urban residents tended to prefer low-maintenance indoor plants, while rural residents showed relatively higher acceptance of outdoor plants requiring moderate management. Overall, the results indicate that garden plant purchase preferences are not primarily expressions of individual taste, but rather structured consumption patterns shaped by settlement environment, lifestyle, and management conditions. By systematically identifying garden plant preference types according to settlement scale, this study provides foundational data for future strategies in garden plant cultivation, production, distribution, and policy development. However, as the study focused on selected areas within the Honam region in S. Korea, future research should expand the survey scope and incorporate longitudinal and seasonal analyses to achieve broader generalization.
