This study aims to explore the ideal relationship between teachers and learners in Korean literature education.
Given that Korean literature education has yet to establish a fully developed pedagogical theory, this study integrates the field with Bollnow’s theory of “educational atmosphere,” thereby offering a significant approach that bridges the gap between literature education and educational philosophy.
Bollnow’s “educational atmosphere,” the core concept of this study, refers to the psychological and emotional states that, while not always explicitly conscious, decisively influence the success or failure of education.
He posits that dynamics such as “anxiety and trust,” “distance and intimacy,” and “criticism and acceptance” exist wherever education takes place.
Since Korean literature education encompasses elements beyond the grammar and vocabulary acquisition—such as sensitivity to emotional and symbolic language, active interaction for meaning interpretation, and intercultural encounters—it is closely related to the elements of Bollnow’s educational atmosphere.
Based on the premise that the quality of Korean literature education is determined by the quality of the educational atmosphere, this study seeks to reconceptualize teacher–learner relationships in order to articulate the educational atmosphere of an interactive Korean literature classroom. To this end, the study establishes the following three research questions:
First, what types of relationships can be established between teachers and learners when Bollnow’s theory of educational atmosphere is applied to Korean literature education?
Second, how can the teacher-learner relationship be theoretically conceptualized for interactive Korean literature education?
Third, how can interactivity be realized in a Korean literature classroom that applies the educational atmosphere theory?
To address these questions, this study employed research methodologies including literature review, surveys, and action research.
The structure of this thesis is summarized as follows:
Chapter I outlines the purpose and necessity of the study. It reviews prior research on literature education in Korean language education, Bollnow’s educational anthropology, and classroom interaction theories, and describes the research subjects, questions, methods, and procedures.
Chapter II theoretically examines how teacher–learner relationships can be established in Korean literature education. Following a review of the current status of Korean literature education, this chapter explicates Bollnow’s theory of educational atmosphere and emphasizes its importance in teaching literary works to Korean language learners. Specifically, the relationship between educational atmosphere theory and Korean literature education is discussed in terms of four dimensions: “trust and stability,” “active interaction,” “desirable teacher roles and attitudes,” and “the significance of learners.” It also organizes the connection between classroom interaction theory and educational atmosphere theory into three aspects.
Chapter III investigates teacher–learner relationships for interactive Korean literature education. First, a survey using an 11-item questionnaire was administered to 30 Korean language teachers and 33 learners to examine their perceptions and experiences regarding interaction in Korean literature education.
Subsequently, a two-session literature lesson based on Han Kang’s Human Acts (소년이 온다) was implemented to analyze the educational atmosphere formed in the classroom context and the interaction patterns between teachers and learners. This chapter presents cases in which interaction was hindered due to the teacher’s suppression of learners’ interpretations, contrasted with instances where learners internalized the educational content through the teacher’s acceptance and encouragement. The latter part of the chapter discusses the respective roles of teachers and learners and the educational atmosphere they should jointly cultivate to promote interactive literature education.
Chapter IV concludes by summarizing the types of teacher–learner relationships necessary for realizing interactive Korean literature education. It further proposes the attitudes teachers and learners should adopt in practical educational settings to enhance the quality of literature education.
The primary significance of this study lies in its emphasis on the importance of educational atmosphere in teaching Korean literary works and its exploration of desirable teacher–learner relationships within this field. Moreover, this study contributes to the field by proposing a concrete model of an interaction-oriented educational atmosphere for Korean literature classrooms, addressing the lack of practical methodologies for fostering such environments. Korean literature education should regard learners as key educational agents, just as teachers are, and facilitate learner-centered instruction by encouraging their active participation. This discussion is expected to contribute to establishing methodologies for interactive Korean literature education.
