This study aims to identify the structural characteristics, growth trends, and promising technology domains of the smart grid sector through an integrated analysis of domestic and international academic papers and patents, focusing on its strategic importance as a core enabling technology within the intelligent advanced components industry. Smart grid technology represents a comprehensive technological system for intelligent power infrastructure and a key convergence domain in which major technology groups of the intelligent advanced components industry—such as sensors, semiconductors, power conversion modules, communication components, and control systems—are integrated. These characteristics indicate that analyzing smart grid technology trends is essential for understanding structural transformations and growth potential across the broader industry, beyond a single technological field.
For this purpose, the study analyzed 78,935 academic papers and 92,114 patents selected through preprocessing and normalization from approximately 220,000 documents collected from RISS, Web of Science, and KIPRIS. To address structural and linguistic differences between papers and patents, as well as between Korean- and English-language documents, advanced text preprocessing procedures were applied, including morphological analysis, stop-word dictionary construction, and synonym normalization.
The study employed a text-mining–based analytical framework combining frequency analysis, time-series analysis, keyword co-occurrence network analysis, and strategic diagram analysis to examine the structural features and developmental trajectories of smart grid technologies. The results show that smart grid research in both domestic and international contexts is commonly structured around core axes of power, energy, systems, and control technologies. However, academic research tends to emphasize data-driven analysis and intelligent operational concepts, whereas patents exhibit a technological bias toward application-oriented domains centered on communication, power control, and power conversion technologies. Time-series analysis reveals that international research maintained relatively stable growth even during the COVID-19 pandemic, while domestic research displayed greater volatility in response to policy changes and external environmental factors. Furthermore, keyword network analysis indicates that domestic research is characterized by a single-hub structure centered on a limited number of core technologies, whereas international research forms a multi-hub structure integrating distributed energy resources, microgrids, and data- and model-based technologies, thereby establishing a highly extensible technological ecosystem. Based on these analyses, the identified promising technology domains can be summarized as data-driven operation and control technologies, distributed resource and energy storage integration technologies, and communication-based power grid technologies.
Overall, the findings confirm that smart grid technology is transitioning from an infrastructure-centered stage based on power and communication systems toward an intelligent energy operation platform integrating data- and AI-based operation and management functions. In particular, differences in technological development trajectories between papers and patents, as well as between domestic and international contexts, reflect role differentiation between the research stage and the technology development and protection stage, along with disparities in technological accumulation environments.
In addition, this study compares the derived analytical results with the smart grid technology portfolio of the intelligent advanced components industry in Chungcheongbuk-do, enabling an interpretation of the region’s relative technological position and characteristics within the global technological structure and deriving analytical implications applicable to regional industrial analysis.
The academic contribution of this study lies in empirically conceptualizing smart grid technology as a structural and hierarchical technological system rather than a single technological field, and in proposing an integrated quantitative analysis framework that enables systematic interpretation of technological evolution patterns and structural differences through the combined analysis of domestic and international papers and patents. By doing so, this research provides an academic foundation for understanding the structural development pathways of smart grid technologies from the perspective of the intelligent advanced components industry, beyond conventional fragmented statistical analyses or descriptive trend studies.
