This study originates from an interest in how ordinary Korean people perceive and respond to the Korean language spoken by foreigners living in Korea. The emotional responses and evaluative stances that the general public holds toward particular languages or speech styles are referred to as Language Attitudes. Despite their significance, Language Attitudes toward foreigners’ Korean speech have received limited attention in previous Korean language education research.
This study focuses specifically on Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment, defined as foreign residents in Korea who are employed without professional skills or formal qualifications. Statistical reports indicate that while discrimination against foreigners in Korea is primarily attributed to their country of origin, discrimination against Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment is most strongly associated with their Korean language ability. This suggests that such discrimination stems largely from Koreans’ Language Attitudes, which differentiate native Korean speech from the Korean speech of foreigners.
Against this background, the present study aims to investigate Koreans’ Language Attitudes toward the Korean speech of Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment and to elucidate the realities of these attitudes. Through this analysis, the study seeks to discuss directions for improving the content of Korean for occupational purposes education. Given that Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment constitute an indispensable part of Korean society, this research holds both social significance and academic value.
The study places particular emphasis on examining Language Attitudes toward the Korean speech of Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment and comparing these attitudes between younger and middle-aged native Korean speakers. It specifically aims to describe differences in Language Attitudes according to generation, gender, frequency of contact, opportunities for interaction, and experiences of overseas travel and residence.
The discussion is organized as follows. Chapter I presents the background and necessity of the study, its research objectives and questions, and outlines the research participants—Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment, younger adults, and middle-aged adults—along with the main research methodology and procedures. Chapter II reviews theoretical perspectives for comparing Language Attitudes between younger and middle-aged groups, including Language Attitudes, linguistic purism and multilingualism, language perception, and Korean for occupational purposes. Chapter III analyzes Koreans’ Language Attitudes toward the Korean speech of Foreign Workers in Non-Professional Employment through an experimental study, describing the findings by subdividing them into specific factors for generational comparison. Finally, Chapter IV summarizes the main findings and concludes by offering suggestions for fostering healthier Language Attitudes in Korean society and proposing directions for enhancing Korean for occupational purposes education.
