Despite South Korea’s world-class volume of patent applications, it faces the limitation that the qualitative utilization of granted patents—namely, their connection to tangible economic value—remains insufficient. This suggests that, beyond mere patent ownership, systematic internal managerial capabilities within firms that link patents to performance are important. Against this background, this study empirically examines the effects of quantitative patent indicators (number of patent applications) and qualitative indicators (number of forward citations, patent family size, and number of claims) on corporate performance for domestic small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises. Furthermore, it tests how acquisition of Intellectual Property Management Certification, which serves as a proxy for a firm’s intellectual property management capability, moderates these relationships.
For the analysis, patent information and corporate financial data were integrated, and a final sample of 312 firms consisting of certified and non-certified firms was constructed through propensity score matching (PSM). In addition, hierarchical multiple regression analysis with a three-year time lag was conducted in order to account for the delay with which patent activity is reflected in firm performance.
The results show that the effects of the patent indicators are mixed. The number of patent applications exhibits a partially positive effect on net profit margin, and the number of forward citations has a partially positive effect on return on equity. However, the core qualitative indicator, patent family size, shows a significant negative relationship with operating profit margin and net profit margin. In addition, the moderating effect of Intellectual Property Management Certification does not appear in the expected positive direction. In particular, a paradoxical result is observed in that, among certified firms, the negative impact of patent family size on these performance measures becomes even stronger.
These findings suggest that, in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises, the substantial costs associated with securing patent families may act as a burden on short-term firm performance. This indicates that, when formulating patent strategies, SMEs may need a strategic approach of “selection and concentration” that takes firm capabilities into account rather than pursuing simple quantitative expansion. The results also confirm that acquisition of Intellectual Property Management Certification may not necessarily lead to improved corporate performance. Accordingly, the study implies that future policy discussions should examine how to refine the support system so that the certification scheme can alleviate firms’ cost burdens and be more effectively linked to tangible outcomes from patent commercialization.
