During the production process of oil & gas from reservoirs, corrosive gases such as CO₂ and H₂S can be produced. This can cause corrosion in production pipelines, and cracks can generate in the worst case. This study evaluated the conditions that can cause corrosion in oil and gas production wells, and analyzed the factors that affect the corrosion rate in production wells. Also, modeling was performed by utilizing the de Waard model (1991, 1995) to calculate the corrosion rate of oil and gas production facilities. A field of study was selected as a production well with CO₂ corrosion environment in the Hair Dalma gas field, the United Arab Emirates. This modeling presented changes in pressure, flow rate, velocity, and corrosion rate at different depths when cracks occurred, reflecting field conditions. To construct the model, this study first calculated the flow rate of leaking gas and variations of pressure caused by CO₂ corrosion cracking in production well, using the Darcy-Weisbach equation. As a next step, the leakage flow rate and variations of pressure were input into Pipesim of Schlumberger, and the changes of pressure & production rate at the wellhead were analyzed according to the input data. Then, nodal analysis was performed for three cases using the wellhead as a node to predict the production rate and variations of pressure due to crack. First case, a nodal analysis was performed based on crack diameter. The results showed that as the crack diameter increased, the leakage rate increased, leading to a greater reduction in flow rate. In other words, as the crack cross-sectional area increased, the fluid leakage rate increased dramatically, resulting in greater pressure loss. In particular, when the crack diameter was 7 mm, approximately 22% reduction of flow rate was observed compared to the case without crack. It was confirmed that the decrease in flow rate due to crack occurrence can also directly affect the flow conditions and corrosion reactions within the well tubing. Second case, a nodal analysis was performed based on the crack depth. When cracking occurred at depth of 4,000 ft, the pressure decreased by approximately 8.95%. Additionally, when a crack occurred at depth of 12,000 ft, the pressure reduced by approximately 11.68%. As the crack depth increased, the gas volume was compressed by higher pressure, thereby more gas molecules leaked through the crack. As the crack depth increased, the IPR curve shifted downward, and consequently, the intersection point where production occurred tended to move toward lower production rate. Final case, a nodal analysis, with cracks in production well, was performed based on wellhead pressure. As wellhead pressure increased, a production rate under standard conditions was observed as a decreasing trend, although the change in production rate was relatively small. At wellhead pressure of 700 psia, production rate was approximately 51.1 MMscf/d, and approximately 51.0 MMscf/d at wellhead pressure of 1,000 psia. This is because that as wellhead pressure increases, the pressure within well increases, compressing the gas and allowing more gas molecules to leak through crack of well. The results of this study can be used to predict corrosion behavior in a CO2 environment for securing structural stability and corrosion reduction design of production wells.
