This study examined how Francesco Paolo Tosti’s La Sera interprets and expresses the poetic characteristics of Gabriele D’Annunzio. The work illustrates how Tosti transforms the naturalistic and sensuous imagery of the poem, as well as its serene and solitary evening atmosphere, into a refined musical language.

In this song cycle, the piano and vocal line function as expressive partners rather than mere followers of the text. The piano shapes the emotional landscape of the poem, while the voice reflects its shifting sentiments. Their interaction reinforces the poetic imagery and deepens the emotional meaning, allowing Tosti to expand and intensify the expressive world of the text.

The piano interludes highlight both structural and emotional nuances within the poem, depicting the quiet evening scene and supporting the vocal line through alternating moments of tension and release. Tosti’s treatment of D’Annunzio’s symbolic imagery, along with his use of techniques such as enjambement, creates a close integration between poetry and music and effectively conveys the poem’s emotional complexity.
Taken together, La Sera demonstrates how D’Annunzio’s poetic world and Tosti’s musical sensibility converge to form a unified artistic expression. The work underscores Tosti’s late-style development and reveals his innovative approach to the Italian song cycle. By showing how music can amplify poetic meaning and emotional depth, this study provides insight into Tosti’s compositional language and the expressive possibilities of poetry–music interaction.

Building on these findings, future research may compare La Sera with Tosti’s other song cycles or further analyze the relationship between D’Annunzio’s poetic imagery and Tosti’s musical interpretation to deepen the understanding of their artistic connection.
