This paper studied the palace gardens and private gardens of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea and the Ming and Qing Dynasty in China. The first purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of natural ideas and their expressions that have been implicated in traditional gardens in Korea and China, and the two objectives are to derive the similarity and differentiation of natural thoughts in the traditional gardens of the two countries, and to convey a message to preservation and modern gardens as cultural heritage.
The research methods are literature review and case analysis, and the results are as follows.
First, Korea and China have a common natural aesthetic that humans must be in harmony with nature and that nothing artificial can be more beautiful than nature.
Second, while influenced by shamanism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Sinseon, Feng Shui, and the Five Elements of Yin and Yang, both natural and garden ideas between Korea and China formed distinct garden cultures.
Third, Korea has created a nature-friendly garden that minimizes human interference in the sense that life in harmony with nature is the most rational, and China has created a somewhat artificial garden culture that creates another nature by moving and reconstructing natural objects.
Fourth, both Korean and Chinese gardens aim for natural landscape landscapes, and the fact that they give symbolism and personification to harmony and garden composition components to transform garden viewers into a private world was common among Korea and China.
The interpretation and application of differentiated traditional techniques were verified through case analysis of four palace gardens and private gardens. Through this, the meaning and implementation of natural thoughts contained in the traditional gardens of Korea and China were revealed.
