This paper proposes a method for designing a system that utilizes intelligent fire detectors equipped with location tracking and early fire detection capabilities to enable rapid and accurate initial response to fire outbreaks. The fire rate and associated damages in South Korea have been steadily increasing. The increased use of electricity and gas in buildings has heightened the risk of fire. To prevent this, many facilities are installing fire detectors. However, low-cost detectors on the market are slow to detect fires and have difficulty accurately identifying the location of fires. High-end detectors, on the other hand, are expensive and require separate communication infrastructure, making them unsuitable for general consumers or small buildings. Therefore, this study designed an intelligent fire detector system that combines location tracking and early fire detection capabilities with existing heat-based detectors. This system also utilizes Power Line Communication technology, which utilizes power lines as communication lines without dedicated communication infrastructure. This design achieves both cost-effectiveness and practicality. The STM32L010F4P6 MCU was used for the detector's control. The detector's temperature is measured via a thermistor, and the MCU analyzes the ADC values to enable early fire detection based on abnormal temperature rise patterns even before the critical temperature is reached. This complements the limitations of existing thermal detectors and enables more proactive fire response. When a fire is detected, data including the detector number and line number are transmitted to the receiver via the power line, and the detected fire location can be intuitively displayed on the receiver's LCD. The power line communication circuit is based on BJT TR and OP-AMP and supports stable data transmission and reception over the power line. A sequential communication algorithm is applied to transmit and receive data without collisions even when multiple detectors are connected simultaneously. In addition, the Modbus communication protocol is applied and a CRC-based error detection function is provided to ensure communication reliability. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed system is capable of real-time data transmission between the receiver and detector. Furthermore, it proactively identifies temperature abnormalities before a fire breaks out and immediately transmits detector location information to the user in the event of a fire, demonstrating faster and more accurate initial response compared to existing systems. This system is low-cost to install and maintain, and significantly improves the performance of existing fire detectors, suggesting its potential for expansion into an intelligent fire response platform applicable to a variety of environments.
