This study aims to empirically examine the multifaceted effects of China’s unprecedented demographic transition—known as “aging before affluence (未富先老)”—on economic growth. Unlike developed countries, China has entered an “aged society” from an “aging society” within just 22 years, a phenomenon characterized by severe time compression, which poses substantial pressure on policy adaptation and institutional adjustment. Against this background, the study moves beyond the one-dimensional view that population aging functions solely as an economic headwind and instead explores the coexistence of opposing forces—an inherent contradiction termed the Silver Paradox—through both theoretical and empirical lenses.
To capture this multilayered dynamic, the research employs annual time-series data from 1990 to 2023 and constructs a dual analytical framework combining the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) model. The ARDL model is utilized to identify long-term equilibrium relationships among variables and estimate the long-run growth trajectory of the economy, while the SVAR model is applied to analyze short-term responses and transmission mechanisms following exogenous shocks.
The empirical findings provide support for the existence of the Silver Paradox. First, the ARDL results indicate that the proportion of the population aged 65 and over (AGE65) exerts a statistically significant negative effect on real GDP growth (RGDPG), suggesting that population aging tends to weaken long-term growth potential by constraining labor supply. Second, the SVAR impulse response analysis reveals contrasting short-term effects. An unexpected acceleration in aging (D_AGE65) immediately leads to a significant decline in the labor force participation rate (D_LFPR), reflecting a supply-side constraint, while after a certain lag, it stimulates per-capita consumption expenditure (PCEX), reflecting a demand-side boost—the so-called silver economy effect. This implies that aging simultaneously embodies both long-term structural constraints and short-term demand stimuli. In addition, total factor productivity (TFP) remains a key growth driver but proves insufficient to fully offset the adverse effects of aging. The estimated error correction term (ECT) coefficient of –0.970 further suggests the Chinese economy’s rapid adjustment capacity in response to external shocks.
In sum, this study empirically demonstrates that China’s population aging represents a complex phenomenon encompassing both long-term constraints on growth and short-term drivers of demand expansion. These results highlight the need for multidimensional policy responses to ensure sustainable economic growth, including labor-market reform, industrial upgrading through the development of the silver economy, technological innovation to enhance productivity, and fiscal sustainability. Ultimately, the study underscores that the stability of China’s macroeconomic development will depend on how effectively the Silver Paradox is understood and managed.
