Lithium metal has attracted significant attention as a promising anode material for next-generation secondary batteries due to its high theoretical capacity (3860 mAh g⁻¹) and low electrochemical potential (3.04 V vs. SHE), enabling the realization of high energy density systems. However, lithium metal anodes suffer from severe performance degradation caused by unstable electrolyte–interface reactions and uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth. During the dendritic growth process, electrically isolated inactive lithium (dead Li) is generated, leading to rapid capacity decay. Moreover, the sharply grown dendrites can penetrate the separator and come into direct contact with the cathode, potentially inducing internal short circuits, fire hazards, and thermal runaway. Therefore, enhancing interfacial stability and suppressing dendrite growth are essential for the practical application of lithium metal anodes, and numerous strategies have recently been proposed to address these challenges.
In this study, we propose a dual-protection strategy to improve interfacial stability and suppress dendrite growth on lithium metal electrodes. An artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer was first formed using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), followed by the introduction of a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer protective layer on top. The resulting uniform organic–inorganic composite coating effectively suppressed lithium dendrite formation and reduced interfacial resistance, thereby significantly enhancing chemical stability.
The Li/Li symmetric cell fabricated with the dual-protected lithium exhibited not only a lower charge-transfer resistance (50 Ω) compared to the pristine Li symmetric cell, but also a reduced nucleation overpotential (66.7 mV), demonstrating superior cycling stability and improved rate capability. Similarly, Li/LiFePO₄ cells employing the dual-protected lithium anode showed enhanced performance and higher capacity retention across all tested current rates (0.2 C, 0.5 C, and 1 C).
Overall, these results indicate that the introduction of an organic–inorganic dual-layer protection on lithium metal electrodes substantially improves electrode stability and represents an effective strategy for the commercialization of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.
