This study aims to quantitatively analyze the indoor thermal environment of a university library atrium during the summer by examining various ventilation strategies and evaluating the relationships among ventilation efficiency, thermal stratification, and Predicted Mean Vote (PMV). Atrium spaces characterized by extensive glass envelopes often experience excessive solar heat gain and convective air movement, leading to heat accumulation in the upper zone and the development of thermal stratification. These issues become more critical during cooling operation, emphasizing the need for appropriate ventilation strategies to maintain thermal comfort in occupied areas. Accordingly, this study compares the thermal performance of multiple ventilation scenarios, including natural ventilation, upper-level exhaust, and Air Handling Unit (AHU) operation. The study facility is an atrium without mechanical ventilation, and on-site temperature measurements were conducted to validate the CFD simulation results. Using Star CCM+, airflow patterns, ventilation efficiency, temperature distribution, and PMV were evaluated for each ventilation scenario. A total of 50 data points, segmented by a 10 m ×10 m grid at the breathing height, were used to analyze the correlations among ventilation efficiency, thermal stratification, and PMV through Pearson correlation analysis and t-tests.
The results show that natural ventilation (Case 1, Case 2) achieved high ventilation efficiency at 82.8% and 64.9%, respectively, while natural ventilation combined with upper-level exhaust (Case 3, Case 4) showed lower performance at 29.1% and 15.8%. AHU operation (Case 5) demonstrated relatively high efficiency at 76.7%. In terms of temperature distribution, natural ventilation reduced overall thermal gradients despite localized temperature increases near openings, whereas the AHU case exhibited the most uniform temperature distribution. The correlation analysis between ventilation efficiency and thermal stratification yielded a Pearson correlation coefficient of –0.87, indicating that increased ventilation efficiency reduces the vertical temperature difference. PMV analyses also showed lower values under all ventilation strategies compared to the non-ventilated condition, with improved thermal comfort under higher ventilation efficiency. The correlation coefficient between ventilation efficiency and PMV was –0.79, and t-tests confirmed statistically significant differences between the variables.
In conclusion, higher ventilation efficiency leads to reduced upper-level heat accumulation, smaller vertical temperature differences, and lower PMV values, indicating an overall improvement in thermal conditions within the atrium. The findings of this study provide fundamental data for designing and operating effective ventilation strategies in atrium-type large spaces.
