Single-viewpoint measurement (single image based measurement) is a technique that can estimate the actual length of an object from a single image of a monocular camera. This technique is very useful for understanding real-space scenes in monocular camera environments such as CCTV. However, existing object length estimation methods including single-view measurement have limitations that the object to be measured and the object of known actual length must be located perpendicular to the ground on the same plane. This has limited coverage in real spatial environments. In this study, we overcome these limitations and propose a new single image based length estimation technique that can also estimate the actual length of an object inclined or placed on a plane other than perpendicular to the ground. The proposed method consists of three key components. First, the vertical component length is estimated based on the actual length of the object to be measured by using the vanishing point and the intersection ratio. After that, the horizontal component length of the target object is estimated by converting the object position coordinates on the image to the actual distance using the vanishing point and camera parameters (pitch angle, viewing angle, focal length) automatically acquired by detecting the direction of gravity. Finally, we recover the depth scale by calculating the normal vector of the plane where the object is located from the vanishing point, and automatically calculating the vertical intersection point falling from the object to be measured to that plane using the actual vertical length of the reference object. This enables accurate estimation of the actual length even if the object is tilted or present in a different plane by finding the vertical and horizontal component reference points of the object to be measured. The performance was verified using 180 directly shot images. This image is an environment that includes the same plane or different planes, including objects that are perpendicular or inclined to the ground. As a result of the experiments, the error remained constant even when the camera shooting setting was changed, and the length estimation accuracy reached up to 97.49%. Stable length estimation was possible even in complex scene structures by automatically detecting the point where the tilted object meets the floor. Existing methods were applicable only when the vertical object was in the same plane as the reference object, but the proposed method can calculate the length of the object even if the plane is different. In this respect, we greatly extended the limitations of existing SVM-based measurements.
