This study systematically examines the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption on the changing roles of external auditors. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, this research integrates case studies of global Big 4 accounting firms with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) quantitative analysis and qualitative open-ended responses from 18 external auditors in Korea (valid responses).
The research framework integrates Professional Sociology Theory, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and the Job Characteristics Model (JCM), structuring factors influencing auditor role changes into six primary dimensions—Efficiency (E), Effectiveness (A), Acceptance (C), Risk Management (R), Capability Change (F), and Organizational Change (G)—and 21 sub-factors.
Key findings are as follows. First, Capability Change (F) ranked first with a weight of 0.2106, indicating that auditors perceive capability transformation as central to AI adoption. This was supported by qualitative responses, where 8 out of 13 respondents (61.5%) emphasized focusing on professional judgment roles, corroborating the AHP quantitative results. Second, Acceptance (C) ranked second with a weight of 0.2015, revealing that technology acceptance is a critical factor determining the success of AI adoption. Open-ended responses revealed widespread concerns about acceptance barriers, including information security and ethics (3 cases) and AI reliability verification (4 cases).
Third, among sub-factors, Work Automation (E3) achieved the highest global weight of 0.0858, supported by numerous reports (11 cases) of efficiency gains in document drafting automation and information search time reduction. Fourth, perceptions varied by position and experience.
Partners and directors prioritized Acceptance and Capability Change almost equally while also valuing Organizational Change, whereas practitioners emphasized Efficiency most highly while also recognizing Capability Change and Organizational Change relatively evenly.
Case analyses of Big 4 firms revealed concrete efficiency improvements: 25% reduction in audit planning time, 2.5-fold increase in anomaly detection rates, and 30% reduction in document review time.
These findings indicate a role transformation from simple verifier to AI assurance provider.
This study expands AI audit research from technology-centric to human-organization-centric perspectives, contributing theoretically through an integrated recognition model combining Professional Sociology Theory, TAM and JCM. Methodologically, the study enhances reliability and validity through triangulation of AHP quantitative analysis with qualitative open-ended responses. Practical implications include strategies for auditor capability development, technology acceptance enhancement, and AI audit quality management systems. Policy recommendations address AI audit guideline establishment, AI auditor certification systems, and policy monitoring for balanced development of the audit market.
