A Case Study on Sandplay Therapy for Reducing Maladaptive Emotions in Dizygotic Twin Children Yoon, Jeong Ran Major in Counseling and Educational Psychology Department of Social and Cultural Education Westminster Graduate School of Theology This paper is a case study on sandplay therapy aimed at reducing maladaptive emotions in dizygotic (fraternal) twin children. The study's objective is to help these twin children form secure attachments. To this end, the researcher applied John Bowlby's (1907-1990) attachment theory. Dora Kalff's (1904-1990) sandplay therapy theory was also utilized, and Erich Neumann's (1905-1960) theory of ego development was used as the analytical framework for psychological developmental changes observed during the therapeutic process. Through this theoretical approach, the researcher explored how sandplay therapy facilitates recovery from maladaptive emotions in dizygotic twin children. A mixed-methods research design, integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches, was employed. The primary analytical method was a qualitative multiple case study, allowing for an in-depth exploration of the children's psychological changes. To supplement this, a quantitative analysis using pre- and post-test scores from the K-CBCL (Korean Child Behavior Checklist) was conducted concurrently. The study participants comprised three pairs of dizygotic twins, totaling six children, who reported difficulties in areas such as emotions, parent-child relationships, and peer relationships. The research period spanned approximately 14 months, from January 2022 to February 2023. The researcher provided 36 individual sandplay therapy sessions for each child. These sessions were conducted once a week for 50 minutes at the researcher's clinic. All participants commonly experienced negative emotions, with major issues including resentment, anger, depression, and anxiety. They exhibited withdrawal or hyperactivity in school life and peer interactions, and also displayed resentment and hostility towards their parents. The mothers, as primary caregivers, reported significant psychological burdens related to child-rearing. Psychological assessments identified insecure attachment formed in early childhood as the primary cause of maladjustment. Sandplay therapy was found to be effective in transforming this insecure attachment into secure attachment. The findings of this study are as follows: First, participants underwent a corrective emotional experience through sandplay therapy, which facilitated a change from insecure to secure attachment. Second, participants showed a reduction in negative emotions and an improvement in self-expression and emotional regulation skills during the therapeutic process. Third, participants experienced positive changes in their relationships with their mothers, along with increased engagement in peer relationships and school life.
