This study aimed to develop a systematic and evidence-based framework to promote the mental health of medical students in South Korea. To achieve this, mental health support practices in domestic and international medical schools were analyzed to identify effective strategies. Surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted with Korean medical students to assess the stressors they experience and their specific needs. Additionally, a Delphi study was performed with experts to ensure the validity and reliability of the developed framework, resulting in a structured and actionable approach.
The findings revealed that medical students face high levels of stress in areas such as academics, health, and career planning, with significant variations in stress levels and factors across academic years. Students in the second and third years of the medical course reported the highest levels of stress, and additional analyses identified clinical practice stress among third- and fourth-year students. International case studies highlighted strategies such as strengthened confidentiality, integrated approaches, tailored support for minority groups, activation of peer support programs, and collaboration networks with experts. These strategies were adapted to the domestic context to develop a framework tailored to South Korean medical students.
The proposed framework focuses on preventing mental health issues among medical students while simultaneously supporting their academic and personal achievements. It incorporates various programs and customized approaches designed to address psychological needs and enhance overall well-being. This framework provides foundational resources for medical schools to establish effective mental health support policies, enabling students to thrive in a healthy learning environment and ultimately improving the quality of healthcare provided by future physicians.
