The intertidal mudflats on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula are one of the key stopover areas where many of migratory shorebird populations aggregate to refuel enegy for their annual migration along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF). Thus, environmental changes and habitat loss here could have a significant impact on multiple populations in the entire flyway. Therefore, research that assesses habitat quality and predicts the impact of changes in habitat environment on populations at stopover areas will help to establish an effective conservation strategy for multiple populations of migratory shorebirds in the EAAF.
I estimated the impact of the sea-level rise, which is regarded as one of the major factors responsible for the loss of intertidal mudflats, on the loss of foraging availability of Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata) and Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) in the southern intertidal mudflat of Ganghwa Island, South Korea, which is one of the main stopover sites in the EAAF. As the crab Macrophthalmus japonicus, main prey of curlews in this area is found mainly in the upper intertidal zone with fine-grained sediments and a high atmospheric exposure rate, the direct effect of sea-level rise on the loss of foraging availability of curlews is less serious than the loss of mudflat area. However, the reduction of major foraging areas in the upper intertidal mudflat and the human disturbance from the shore may have a disproportionate effect. Thus, minimizing the artificial disturbance from the shore may be the core strategy for conserving foraging areas.
I estimated the total biomass of M. japonicas as a measure of habitat carrying capacity of the southern intertidal mudflat of Ganghwa Island for curlews. The estimation accounted for spatial differences of the prey biomass and the available foraging time as affected by tide patterns. Based on this, curlew populations account for 30.26% of the habitat carrying capacity. When only considering the spatial differences of prey biomass, it was 14.71% and the estimation based on the simple average biomass was 10.92%. This study shows that there can be considerable differences in the results of habitat carrying capacity estimation between different methods, indicating that various environmental factors that affect the estimation results of habitat carrying capacity must be considered to achieve a more precise assessment.
Inferring migratory connectivity of shorebird populations at stopover areas could provide key information to predict how the environmental impacts and habitat loss at the stopover areas will affect multiple populations in the flyway. I used stable isotope analysis (2H, 13C, and 15N), which are well documented as effective intrinsic markers to infer migratory connectivity of bird populations, to infer breeding and wintering areas and to examine the differences in those values among populations of Terek Sandpipers (Xenus cinereus) at stopover sites in South Korea. The potential migratory ranges of Terek Sandpiper populations from Ganghwa and Yubu Island determined using 2H values were similar to migration origins and boundaries determined from leg flag re-sightings of the species in this flyway. Those inferred breeding areas corresponded to the distribution of known nesting sites with high breeding density in eastern Siberia and locations where individuals carrying leg flags from Australia were sighted. Papua New Guinea in the Melanesia region, Malaysia and Indonesia which are known as main wintering countries for this species along the EAAF were identified as the most likely wintering areas.
These results suggest that stable isotopes can be effectively used alongside other existing methods to infer the migratory connectivity for long-distance migratory shorebird species that occur over many countries and continents in this flyway.
