The performance of next‑generation energy technologies is closely linked to the crystal structure and microstructure of the materials involved. This abstract outlines how controlling synthesis tailors the phase of three different systems—high‑nickel layered oxides for lithium‑ion battery cathodes, transition‑metal dichalcogenide electrocatalysts and halide perovskite quantum dots—and improves their functional properties.
Firstly, high‑nickel layered oxide cathodes deliver higher capacities by exploiting the Ni2+/Ni3+/Ni4+ redox couple, but increasing the nickel fraction leads to structural instability. Ni²⁺ can migrate into lithium layers, causing cation disorder, narrowing lithium diffusion pathways and promoting crack formation. We mitigated these issues by co‑doping with high‑valence elements and adjusting lithium stoichiometry. Dopants with low formation energies (such as Mo, Nb and Ti) occupy the nickel sites and strengthen Ni–O bonds, raising the energy barrier for nickel migration, while dopants with higher formation energies (such as W or Zr) slow crystal growth and direct it toward the (104) plane, which offers fast lithium transport. These dopants act as structural pillars that reduce Li/Ni disorder. Adding a controlled excess of lithium during the precursor stage further promotes the growth of single‑crystal‑like primary particles that lack internal grain boundaries. This combination of composition and morphology suppresses crack propagation and enhances long‑term electrochemical stability without sacrificing energy density.
Secondly, transition‑metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoS₂ and WS₂ are promising hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts because they provide abundant edge sites at low cost, but their catalytic activity depends on crystal phase and electronic structure. We synthesised amorphous alloy TMDs containing multiple metals by carefully balancing stoichiometry and annealing. Migration of selected elements and alloying entropy drive amorphisation. Doping adjusts the d‑band centre of tungsten sites, allowing more favourable adsorption of hydrogen and reducing the reaction overpotential. Amorphous TMDs also provide a continuous distribution of active sites and improved electrical connectivity, leading to enhanced catalytic activity.
Thirdly, halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), exemplified by CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals, are attractive for optoelectronic devices due to their tunable band gaps and high photoluminescence efficiency. These nanocrystals can crystallise in cubic, tetragonal or orthorhombic phases, which influence their emission wavelength and stability. We achieved phase‑selective synthesis by adjusting cooling rates, ligand environment and precursor concentration. Rapid cooling stabilised the cubic phase, while slower cooling favoured the orthorhombic phase. To unambiguously identify the formed phase, we employed a statistical approach to X-ray diffraction data, using lasso regression to link specific diffraction peaks to particular polymorphs, and corroborated the results with transmission electron microscopy.
Taken together, orchestrating composition, phase and microstructure enhances performance. High‑nickel cathodes benefit from co‑doping and lithium enrichment to maintain their layered structure and prevent cracking. Multi‑doped amorphous TMDs provide highly active catalysts by combining electronic structure tuning with disorder. Perovskite quantum dots can be directed toward specific phases with predictable optical behaviour through controlled cooling and structural analysis. Our findings underscore the importance of combining experimental synthesis with advanced characterisation and theoretical modelling. Correlating processing conditions with structure and performance reveals common principles for material optimisation and provides a roadmap for future research into high‑performance batteries, catalysts and optoelectronic devices overall.
