Contemporary Koreans live with an internalized “division trauma,” yet often do so in a state of forgetting. More than 72 years after the division of Korea, society is shaped by selective memory, leaving only commemorative narratives and fostering a collective amnesia. If what ought to be remembered is preserved as “monuments” or “archives” through selective memory, practical art that resists such memory takes the form of site-specific art, counter-monuments, and archival art.
This study adopts memory theory as an analytical framework to examine a case study of DMZ site-specific art created by the Generation of Postmemory in South Korea. It first traces the trajectory of memory studies, including the sociological concepts of “collective memory” and “counter-memory”. It employs the key notions of “Realms of Memory(Les Lieux de Mémoire)” and “postmemory” to explore the interrelationship between the memories and identities of the Generation of Postmemory in South Korea and the placeness of the DMZ(Demilitarized Zone).
Subsequently, the study provides an overview of site-specific art and, drawing upon the spatial typologies proposed by Miwon Kwon and Pierre Nora, analyzes the placeness of the DMZ in three dimensions: physical, symbolic, and discursive. The DMZ, established along the Military Demarcation Line under the Armistice Agreement, constitutes a ‘physical place’; it is also a ‘symbolic place’ associated with the formation of collective memory through historical events such as the Korean War and the Armistice, as well as through the internalization of the division system and the contemporary recognition of its ecological significance. Furthermore, through villages such as Yangji-ri, Freedom Village, and Peace Village—Minbuk Village and propaganda villages that foster counter-memory—the DMZ can be understood as a ‘discursive place’ layered with multiple and intersecting memories.
The exhibition history of the generation of postmemory can be traced from the fifth exhibition of the 1980s art collective “Reality and Utterance” titled 6·25, to the 1990s Front DMZ(Demilitarized Zone Art and Cultural Movement Exhibition), and to the ongoing REAL DMZ PROJECT . Contemporary Korean art, continuing in the lineage of the REAL DMZ PROJECT, addresses marginalized and othered private memories that resist grand narrative. These works incorporate the immediacy of “here and now” through media art and performance, rather than being fixated on the temporality of the past.
This study examines the works of Jung Yeondoo(b.1969), Choi Chansook(b.1977), Kwon Hayoun(b. 1981), and the collaborative duo Moon Kyungwon (b.1969) and Jeon Joonho (b.1969) as case studies of DMZ art practices by the postmemory generation that engage in counter-memory against collective memory. These artists who have participated in exhibitions such as DMZ(2019), which resulted from the “REAL DMZ PROJECT”, and through media such as photography and video, they have created site-specific works that reflect the placeness of the DMZ. As members of the postmemory generation who did not experience the Korean War firsthand, they not only bring past events into the present but also confront the ongoing “division trauma” of the “here and now,” producing archival art for future generations. The DMZ, simultaneously a real and imagined place that has lost its sense of place, demands imaginative access due to its physical inaccessibility. These artists approach the DMZ through artistic imagination, revealing a shared concern for the social role of art. This study interprets their works as political acts that resist the “forgetting” of marginalized others by collecting private memories and reimagining them through art.
Accordingly, this thesis investigates the placeness of the DMZ as a formative element shaping the identity of the Generation of Postmemory in South Korea, and explores how their site-specific art practices function as acts of memory and as practical interventions within the postwar condition of division.
