(Nurcholish Madjid)

This study focuses on the Islamic liberal hermeneutics of Fazlur Rahman (1919
–1988), aiming to explore the convergence between traditional revelation and
modern ethics, and to examine how his ideas have influenced contemporary Muslim
societies and academic discourse. To this end, the study first reviews Rahman’s life
and major writings, and analyzes the continuities and distinctions between his
thought and both medieval Islamic philosophy and modern reformist movements
(Chapter 2). It then systematically investigates his major hermeneutical theories—namely, the methodology of Qur’anic interpretation, the Double Movement Theory,
and the concept of Living Sunnah (Chapter 3)—and elucidates their practical
implications through the ethical reinterpretation of Sharia, the application of
Qur’anic values in modern society, ethical practice and modern interpretation
through education, and the modern reconstruction of the Islamic state (Chapter 4).
To evaluate the intellectual legacy and influence of Rahman’s thought, this
study traces the development of post-Rahman liberal Islamic discourse. It first
examines Farid Esack’s liberation theology, focusing on his critical yet constructive
appropriation of Rahman’s ideas within the socio-political context of apartheid
South Africa. It then analyzes the Islamic feminist reinterpretations of the Qur’an
proposed by Amina Wadud and Asma Barlas, both of whom creatively
recontextualized Rahman’s hermeneutics from a gender-conscious perspective.
Furthermore, through the contextualist Qur’anic interpretations advanced by
Nurcholish Madjid in Indonesia and Abdullah Saeed in Australia, the study
elucidates the global diffusion and discursive transformation of Rahman’s
hermeneutical approach (Chapter 5).
The findings demonstrate that Rahman’s hermeneutics transcends theoretical
scholarship, providing a foundational framework for modern Islamic liberal thought
grounded in the principles of justice, equality, liberation, and coexistence. At the
same time, it exposes certain limitations—such as marginalization under the
resistance of traditionalism and fundamentalism, and a partial dependence on
Western modernist paradigms that risk relativizing normative authority. Nevertheless,
Rahman’s Double Movement Theory, his ethics-centered Qur’anic interpretation, and
the modern reconstruction of the Living Sunnah continue to serve as dynamic
intellectual resources, creatively inherited and transformed by subsequent scholars in
diverse contexts.
In conclusion, this study explores the possibility of integrating Islamic tradition
and modern ethical values through Rahman’s hermeneutics, thereby proposing new
directions for the development of Islamic liberal discourse. Rather than treating
Rahman’s thought as a static historical legacy, this research reinterprets it as a
creative and practical response to the religious, ethical, and social challenges
confronting contemporary Muslim societies. In doing so, it redefines Islamic
hermeneutics not as a mere preservation of tradition but as an open and dynamic
discourse capable of engaging with the realities of modern life and expanding the
intellectual horizon of Islamic thought.
Moreover, by demonstrating the hermeneutical flexibility and critical continuity
inherent in Islamic liberalism, this study examines its applicability across diverse
social and cultural contexts. Such an approach provides a robust intellectual
foundation not only for reformist discourse within Muslim societies but also for
interreligious dialogue and global ethical engagement. Accordingly, this research
reinterprets Rahman’s thought while establishing an intellectual framework for the
development of a future-oriented Islamic hermeneutics.
