This study aimed to investigate the relationship between elementary students' Lifestyle Habits (Daily living Habits, Dietary Habits, Exercise Habits) and multiple intelligences, a unique characteristic of learners, and to analyze the impact of Lifestyle Habits on multiple intelligences. The elementary school period is a time of integrated physical, cognitive, and social development, as well as a critical period for the formation of lifestyle habits. Regular lifestyle habits are closely associated with the development of various intelligence domains, such as learning attitudes, self-regulation abilities, and interpersonal relationship formation. Therefore, exploring the relationship between elementary students' Lifestyle Habits and multiple intelligences holds significant academic value for understanding how individual intellectual and behavioral characteristics interact. Furthermore, this study aimed to provide foundational data for customized lifestyle and learning guidance tailored to the Multiple Intelligence characteristics of elementary students.
To achieve these objectives, a survey was conducted over eight weeks from September 1 to October 30, 2025, targeting parents of elementary school students. Of the 320 returned questionnaires, 300 were utilized as final analysis data after excluding those with incomplete responses or missing items. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 30 software, employing frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, cross-tabulation, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The research results are as follows.
First, we analyzed whether elementary students' Lifestyle Habits differed based on lifestyle characteristic factors (BMI, whether watching videos during breakfast, exercise time, sleep time). The results showed that for BMI, significant differences were found between BMI obesity classification groups in factors related to waking time, bowel movement time, media use (screen time, TV viewing time, gaming time), physical activity time (play time, outdoor play time, exercise time, outdoor exercise time), and study time. Notably, distinct differences between groups were observed in play time and exercise time. Children with normal BMI showed a higher proportion of daily physical activity lasting 60 minutes or more compared to children classified as underweight or overweight and above.
Analysis results based on whether children watched videos during breakfast revealed significant differences in Lifestyle Habits, including BMI, bedtime, sleep duration, media use (screen time, TV viewing time, gaming time), physical activity time (playtime, exercise time, outdoor exercise time), study time, and dinner time. Children who watched videos during breakfast were found to have shorter sleep duration and exercise time compared to those who did not. Notably, the proportion of children exceeding the WHO's recommended screen time limit of 2 hours per day ranged from a minimum of 26.4% to a maximum of 75%. This suggests that watching videos during breakfast is closely associated with excessive media use.
Analysis of differences in exercise time revealed significant variations in lifestyle variables including BMI, bedtime, sleep duration, breakfast frequency, school departure time, bowel movement time, bowel habits, media use (screen time, gaming time), physical activity time (play time, outdoor play time, play location, playmates, outdoor exercise time), and study time. Children with lower physical activity levels tended to have increased screen time. Notably, watching videos during breakfast was associated with both insufficient physical activity and increased screen time, confirming that digital exposure in the morning can influence overall daily patterns.
Analysis by sleep duration revealed significant differences in lifestyle variables including BMI, bedtime, wake-up time, breakfast time, breakfast frequency, bowel movement time, screen time, and physical activity time (play time, outdoor play time, play location, exercise time, outdoor exercise time). Children meeting the recommended sleep duration range of 9 to 11 hours tended to have higher physical activity levels than those who did not, and also showed a lower proportion with screen time exceeding 2 hours. This suggests that sufficient sleep positively influences children's daily activity rhythms and media usage regulation.
Second, the analysis of differences in Multiple Intelligences revealed that significant differences were found in bodily-kinesthetic intelligence according to BMI, sleep duration, whether children watched videos during breakfast, and exercise time. In particular, exercise time was identified as the strongest predictor of bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, and BMI, sleep duration, and exercise time were also found to have significant effects on overall Multiple Intelligence scores. Children who maintained regular daily rhythms and appropriate levels of physical activity demonstrated higher Multiple Intelligence scores, confirming that lifestyle factors are closely related to the development of Multiple Intelligences in children.
Third, analysis of the correlation between Lifestyle Habits and Multiple Intelligences revealed that BMI, bedtime, screen time, and dinner time showed a significant negative correlation with Multiple Intelligences. This suggests that delayed sleep rhythms and increased digital device use may negatively impact children's Multiple Intelligence levels, which are related to their intellectual and emotional development.
Fourth, analysis of the impact of Lifestyle Habits on Multiple Intelligences revealed that BMI, bedtime, screen time, outdoor play time, exercise time, and outdoor exercise time significantly influence physical activity within Multiple Intelligences. This indicates that regular lifestyle rhythms and sufficient physical activity can serve as fundamental conditions supporting children's Multiple Intelligence development. However, lifestyle factors alone have limitations in fully explaining Multiple Intelligences. This suggests the need to comprehensively consider various external factors such as home environment, school life, media use, and local environment.
Synthesizing the above results, lifestyle factors such as physical activity, media use, and sleep among elementary school students were found to have both direct and indirect effects on Multiple Intelligences overall. Regular meals, sufficient sleep, maintaining a healthy weight, and physical activity including play were confirmed as key factors promoting children's holistic development. Furthermore, it is necessary to recognize sleep, physical activity, and media use not as isolated factors but as an interconnected system of Lifestyle Habits for promoting elementary students' health and intelligence development. Therefore, since Lifestyle Habits are organically interconnected, a stepwise intervention strategy focusing on relatively feasible lifestyle factors—such as reducing media exposure during breakfast—is judged to be an effective approach for improving children's overall daily rhythms and fostering positive development.
Through this study, we expect to provide foundational data for tailored life guidance and learning instruction based on elementary students' Multiple Intelligence characteristics. This will help overcome the limitations of uniform education and suggest a direction for elementary education that supports holistic development.
