This study empirically examined factors influencing young children’s bilingual development, with a particular focus on Chinese-born mothers’ perceptions of bilingual education, bicultural competence, and mother–child bilingual language use. Based on this framework, the specific research objectives were as follows. First, to examine whether differences exist in children’s Korean and Chinese language use
abilities according to mothers’ personal characteristics (children’s gender and age, primary language used at home, length of residence in Korea, ethnicity, employment status, and family composition). Second, to identify the correlations among mothers’
perceptions of bilingual education, bicultural competence, mother–child bilingual language use, and children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities. Third, to determine the relative influence of these three variables on children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities.
To achieve these research objectives, the study targeted 305 Chinese-born mothers with children aged 3 to 5 years who were enrolled in early childhood education institutions (kindergartens and daycare centers) located in Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan area. Data were collected through an online survey, and after excluding incomplete or insincere responses, a total of 236 questionnaires were used for the final analysis.
For the analysis of the collected data, instruments measuring perceptions of bilingual education, bicultural competence, and children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities were employed. The scale for perceptions of bilingual education was adapted and refined based on Bae Tae-hee (2019), incorporating findings from previous studies (Kang Bu-seon, 2013; Park Gi-ok, 2009; Choi So-yeon, 2015, among others). Bicultural competence was constructed by selecting relevant items from the subfactors identified by Jin Eun-young (2015), based on the Bicultural Self-Efficacy Scale developed by David and Okazaki (2009). Children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities were measured using the Early Childhood Language Assessment developed by Kim Hye-geum et al. (2019) and the revised version by Lee Sang-mi(2022). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0, employing frequency analysis, independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA), partial correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis to examine the major factors influencing children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities The research findings derived from these analytical procedures are as follows.
The results indicate that the personal and environmental background variables of Chinese-born mothers influence children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities in different ways. Excluding children’s gender and age (no statistically significant differences by gender were found in children’s Korean language use abilities, and no statistically significant differences by age were found in children’s Chinese language use abilities), significant differences in children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities were identified according to mothers’ primary language used at home, length of residence in Korea, ethnicity, employment status, and family composition. These findings suggest that bilingual development is not determined in a linear manner solely by biological factors or the amount of language exposure, but rather emerges from the complex interaction of the home language environment, the quality of mother–child interactions, and the linguistic and cultural resources possessed by mothers. In particular, Korean language use abilities were closely associated with variables related to greater exposure to social and educational environments, whereas Chinese language use abilities were relatively more strongly influenced by home-centered factors such as the frequency of language use within the family and mothers’ ethnicity and cultural identity. This demonstrates that bilingual development in children from multicultural families does not follow an identical developmental pathway for both languages, but instead involves language-specific environmental demands and developmental conditions.
After controlling for the effects of these personal and environmental background variables, partial correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted, which more clearly revealed the influence of the major explanatory variables on children’s bilingual language use abilities. The results showed that mother–child bilingual language use emerged as the most influential core variable affecting both children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities, while mothers’ perceptions of bilingual education and bicultural competence also demonstrated significant effects. In particular, the finding that these three variables explained 51% and 52% of the variance in Korean and Chinese language use abilities, respectively, indicates that children’s bilingual development can be substantially predicted not merely by the amount of language exposure, but by mothers’ linguistic and cultural competencies and the actual interactional experiences grounded in these competencies. These results underscore the structurally important role of mothers’ frequency and patterns of language use, as well as their perceptions and attitudes toward bilingualism and biculturalism, in the bilingual development of children from multicultural families.
After controlling for the effects of these personal and environmental background variables, partial correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted, which more clearly revealed the influence of the key explanatory variables on children’s bilingual language use abilities. The results indicated that mother–child bilingual language use emerged as the most influential core variable affecting both children’s Korean and Chinese language use abilities, and that mothers’ perceptions of bilingual education and bicultural competence also exerted significant effects. In particular, the finding that these three variables accounted for 51% and 52% of the variance in Korean and Chinese language use abilities, respectively, suggests that children’s bilingual development can be substantially predicted not merely by the amount of language exposure, but by mothers’ linguistic and cultural competencies and the actual interactional experiences grounded in these competencies. This demonstrates that, in the bilingual development process of children from multicultural families, mothers’ frequency and patterns of language use, as well as their perceptions and attitudes toward bilingualism and biculturalism, play structurally important roles.
In summary, the findings of this study provide both theoretical and practical implications by comprehensively elucidating the effects of the home language environment and mothers’ cultural and linguistic competencies on bilingual development in early childhood within multicultural families. In particular, the study confirms that linguistic diversity in the home and mothers’ cultural sensitivity play a decisive role in children’s language development. These findings may serve as important foundational data for the future formulation of bilingual education policies
for multicultural families, the development of tailored language and cultural education programs for mothers, and the design of language stimulation strategies in early childhood education settings.
