This study reassesses the art-historical significance and functional meanings of ink grapevine folding screens (muk podobyeongpung, 墨葡萄屛風) by examining their development, stylistic transformations, and systems of production and circulation during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After tracing the trajectory of ink grape painting (muk podo-do, 墨葡萄圖) from its fifteenth-century emergence to its nineteenth-century transformation, the study analyzes the stylistic evolution and expanding vogue for ink grapevine screens, as well as their relationship to the calligraphy-andpainting market and patterns of overseas collection.
The stylistic development of Joseon ink grape painting can be divided into four phases: emergence, formation, establishment, and metamorphosis. During the emergence phase, painters adopted Southern Song and Yuan literati modes characterized by oblique compositions, nuanced ink tonalities, and expansive voids. In the formation phase, scholar-official painters expanded the use of abbreviated brushwork and empty space, laying the groundwork for a literati idiom specific to the Joseon context.
In the establishment phase, the rise of Silhak (Practical Learning) fostered a new ink vocabulary that combined close ecological observation with refined brush techniques. Within this context, Yi Gye-ho (李繼祜, 1754–1833) developed the full-vine composition (jeonsusik, 全樹式), providing a critical compositional framework that enabled the adaptation of ink grape paintings to large-scale screen formats.
In the nineteenth-century metamorphic phase, ink grapevine screens underwent further reinterpretation and stylistic expansion, particularly within the production systems of the Honam region. Choi Seok-hwan (崔奭煥, 1808–after 1883) advanced bold full-vine compositions marked by vigorous brush lines, dense ink strokes, and dynamic rhythmic structures, merging literati aesthetics with the visual richness of folk painting.
By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, ink grapevine screens had become an independent pictorial genre. The shift from fragmentary branch motifs to expansive full-vine formats—together with rising ceremonial and decorative demand—facilitated their broad dissemination across Joseon society, supported by the grape’s auspicious symbolism of fecundity and prosperity.
Yi Gye-ho played a central role in systematizing the compositional and brushwork conventions of eighteenth-century screens, establishing a model for later developments. In the nineteenth century, stylistic patterns featuring strong ink contrasts, repetitive rhythmic arrangements, and standardized full-vine constructions—especially those associated with Choe Seok-hwan—became firmly established, enabling the genre to emerge as a representative form of late Joseon popular visual culture.
The study also investigates the production mechanisms of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century painting markets, emphasizing the interactions among artist groups, consumer bases, and workshop-based manufacturing systems. It further analyzes the international circulation of ink grapevine screens through their overseas holdings from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries.
Standardized screen formats, the distribution networks of painting shops and mounting workshops, the mediating role of the Japanese art market, and the stylistic authority of professional painters collectively shaped the genre’s modern global dissemination. The concentration of overseas holdings around specific artists and stylistic types reveals how ink grapevine screens were selectively received and canonized within early modern museum and collecting systems.
In sum, this study demonstrates that ink grapevine folding screens served as a pivotal genre mediating the formal, social, and transnational transformations of late Joseon painting. By integrating analyses of stylistic formation, screen-format development, and systems of production and global circulation, it repositions the ink grapevine screen as a vital site where literati, folk, and professional painting intersected to shape the multilayered visual culture of late Joseon Korea.
