Between traditional gender norms and personal aspirations, the process by which young Cambodian women enter and persist in higher education is not a matter of individual choice alone. Rather, it is a complex trajectory shaped by multiple factors, including family structure, community expectations, economic conditions, and experiences of mobility and migration.
This ethnographic study focuses on the Regional Polytechnic Institute Techo Sen Kampot (RPITSK), a public higher education institution located in southwestern Cambodia. Through long-term fieldwork, it systematically analyzes the educational trajectories of seven female university students from diverse provinces and social backgrounds.
Based on sustained participant observation, immersion in campus life, and repeated semi-structured in-depth interviews, the study finds that stable economic and emotional support from parents and siblings plays a crucial role in enabling these young women to access and remain within the higher education system. Many of the participants had engaged in various forms of paid and unpaid labor since childhood or adolescence, which shaped their perception of "studying" as a pathway to relieve the family’s financial burden, improve their household’s status, and repay their parents. Even after entering university, they continuously negotiated and balanced between academic demands, part-time or paid labor, and familial responsibilities—constantly oscillating between the role of “dutiful daughter meeting family expectations” and “independent individual striving for professional competence.”
The findings reveal that higher education provides these women with expanded social space, reimagined career possibilities, and potential
pathways for upward social mobility. However, structural barriers such as economic precarity, limited local resources, labor market constraints, and persistent gender norms continue to restrict their ability to fully realize autonomy and agency through education.
Therefore, to understand Cambodian women's participation in higher education more holistically, it is necessary to adopt an analytical framework that includes not only institutional structures but also familial environments, local cultural norms, gendered expectations, and broader economic conditions. This study suggests that reliance solely on quantitative indicators such as enrollment rates or academic attainment is insufficient for capturing the full complexity of their educational experience.
