This study explores whether original character (OC) communities can be understood not merely as online creative activities but as participatory game systems interpretable within the framework of game theory. While conventional user-generated content (UGC) platforms maintain a clear distinction between creators and users, OC communities exhibit a distinctive prosumer structure in which all participants function simultaneously as creators and players, necessitating closer analytical examination.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach combining literature review, structural analysis, genre comparison, and a user survey. Based on major theories of games and play, twelve core game mechanics were identified and mapped onto the structural characteristics of OC communities. Subsequently, a survey of 110 community users was conducted to measure experiential perceptions of these game-related elements.
The analysis revealed that OC communities satisfy key conditions of rules, immersion, and immediate feedback across structural, experiential, and contextual dimensions. In particular, elements such as rule-based operation, voluntary participation, identity performance, and collaborative narrative construction received high evaluation scores, indicating that the user experience in OC communities is structurally comparable to that of traditional games.
This study argues that OC communities are evolving into game-oriented creative systems through increasing platformization, enhanced visual expression, and accelerated operational cycles, and proposes them as a “contemporary form of participatory play that expands the conceptual boundaries of games.” By offering the first game-studies-based definition of OC communities, this research holds academic significance and provides foundational insights for future studies on participatory platforms and the expansion of game genres.
