Child abuse is a critical social issue that inflicts fatal damage on a child's holistic development. However, accurate diagnosis and intervention are challenging due to its secretive nature within the home and the developmental limitations of children. Particularly for children with immature verbal expression or strong psychological defenses, traditional interview methods have limitations in uncovering the reality of abuse and deep emotional experiences. Therefore, this study aims to identify the essential meaning of children's abuse experiences by utilizing the ‘AI-based Child Abuse Diagnostic System’ developed by Choi (2024). This system employs a non-face-to-face interaction method via chatbot to minimize defensive attitudes and secure both verbal statements and non-verbal symbolic data.
The subjects of this study were 30 children aged 10 to 12 whose victimization by parental abuse was confirmed. The ‘AI-based Child Abuse Diagnostic System’, built upon Figure Therapy and Family Systems Theory (Choi, 2024), was utilized as the primary research tool. A mixed-methods research design was applied, integrating frequency analysis (quantitative) of animal symbol selection data and phenomenological analysis (qualitative) of the children's statement texts.
The major findings of this study are as follows:
First, an analysis of the types of abuse and symbolic characteristics revealed that all participants (100%) experienced emotional abuse, with 50% suffering from multiple forms of abuse including physical maltreatment. According to the AI system's diagnosis, 40% of the children were classified as having ‘functional relationships.’ This is interpreted not as the absence of abuse, but as the result of ‘traumatic bonding’ and defense mechanisms activated to maintain relationships with the abusive parents. Frequency analysis of symbols showed that the ‘Perpetrator’ symbol (34.0%) representing parents was highest and depicted as threatening predators. Conversely, the ‘Victim’ symbol (31.0%) representing the child was expressed as a helpless prey, and the ‘Protector’ symbol (21.0%) as powerless. This confirms that the children's inner worlds are structured within a framework of ‘threatening predators and helpless prey.’
Second, phenomenological analysis of self-perception and emotional experiences showed that the children formed an ambivalent self-structure where ‘internalized vulnerability’ and ‘defensive aggression’ coexist for survival. The children formed distorted self-concepts through ‘self-blame’ and ‘role reversal.’ They simultaneously utilized conflicting adaptation methods—the ‘identification with the aggressor’ strategy and ‘unconditional obedience’—while employing ‘emotion hiding’ as a core defense mechanism to thoroughly conceal inner fear and sadness.
Third, the characteristics of the parent-child relationship perceived by the children were identified as ‘power imbalance’ and ‘instrumental exploitation.’ Children perceived their parents as controllers threatening survival and themselves as instrumental beings used for the parents' emotional and physical needs. Particularly in the emotional structure of the relationship, a dilemma of ‘disorganized attachment’ was confirmed, where the ‘desire for relationship termination’ (wishing for the abuser's disappearance) and ‘attachment longing’ (wishing for a safe protector) coexisted. However, due to repeated frustration, the children eventually reached a state of ‘learned helplessness’ and ‘resignation,’ distrusting the possibility of parental change.
Fourth, the essential meaning of the abused children's experience, derived from synthesizing these analyses, was defined as a “dynamic process of self-fragmentation to survive in a threatening relational world.” Children were splitting their egos into several pieces through contradictory survival strategies within distorted relationship perceptions; this was revealed to be a desperate existential struggle for survival rather than a simple pathological symptom.
This study holds academic and clinical significance by integrating AI technology into the field of counseling psychology to multidimensionally identify the deep experiences of children—which are difficult to capture through traditional self-report tests—via objective data and projective symbols. The results suggest that therapeutic interventions for abused children should aim beyond the mere cessation of abuse toward the integration of the fragmented self and the reconstruction of distorted relationship representations. Furthermore, this study empirically demonstrates that the AI-based Child Abuse Diagnostic System can be effectively utilized in clinical settings as a screening tool to lower children's defenses and efficiently secure their statements.
