Block-type retaining walls are widely adopted due to their constructability, economic efficiency, and landscape adaptability. However, unlike monolithic gravity retaining walls, block-type systems exhibit discontinuous structural behavior arising from inter-block interfaces, where
micro-slip, rotation, and progressive degradation of shear resistance may occur. These interface-driven mechanisms directly influence load
transfer paths and overall stability. Despite such characteristics, current domestic and international design standards(e.g., KDS, AASHTO)
continue to evaluate block retaining walls based on gravity-wall assumptions, relying on resultant-force-based safety factors that
inadequately capture layer-dependent load transfer and nonlinear interface behavior.
To address these limitations, this study establishes a four-stage integrated verification framework consisting of:
1) experimental determination of block–block interface shear stiffness (k),
2) finite element analysis (FEM) incorporating nonlinear interface spring elements,
3) stability evaluation using the trial wedge method combined with eccentricity (e/B) criteria, and
4) numerical reproduction of an actual failure case involving a vegetated block retaining wall in Cheonan.
The FEM results indicate that more than 70% of the total overturning resistance is mobilized by the lower blocks, whereas the contribution of upper blocks rapidly diminishes due to
cumulative shear slip and increasing displacement. When the allowable displacement criterion (H/200) was applied, self-supporting stability was confirmed for wall heights of 3–4 m;
however, for heights of 5 m or greater, upper-block displacements increased nonlinearly,
indicating that additional stabilization measures—such as reinforcement, shear keys, or
anchors—are essential.
The failure analysis of the Cheonan retaining wall revealed that the original design batter slope (1:0.3) itself did not satisfy overturning stability requirements. Furthermore, construction-
stage steepening of the batter to 1:0.1 reduced the top setback distance from 1,200 mm to 400 mm, inevitably leading to structural collapse.
In summary, this study advances beyond previous research that primarily focused on
comparisons among FEM techniques by conducting a systematic, experimentally grounded
linkage from interface characterization to numerical analysis, trial wedge evaluation, and
failure-case reproduction. The proposed methodology quantitatively clarifies the
discontinuous behavior of block-type retaining walls and highlights the limitations of
monolithic design assumptions. The findings underscore the necessity for a more realistic and
reliable verification framework tailored to block-type retaining wall design.
Future studies incorporating three-dimensional FEM and dynamic loading conditions are
expected to further enhance the robustness of stability assessment for block-type retaining
walls.
